Invalidating the Excel's Warranty

Postby Astro » March 18th, 2012, 5:54 pm

I've been having a discussion with Paul at SO to see if we could reach an understanding, whereby the installation of certain software on the Excel, i.e. ClockWorkMod (CWM), would not compromise the terms of the full SO warranty.

My argument being that CWM is being used to backup and recover our software installations and, being 'allowed' to install it would enable us to recover our devices from software crashes, potentially reducing the load on SO Support, if there's a problem.

I know that we can install CWM and, if there's a problem, remove it and SO would be none the wiser but, naively, I would prefer to be upfront and open about such things.

I was not asking for SO to provide support if a CWM installation caused software problems, but wanted to agree that it would not invalidate the warranty for unrelated issues, e.g. hardware failures.

Unsurpisingly, Paul was not to be persuaded on any aspect of the matter and commented:
Unfortunately any installation of this software will invalidate your warranty in its entirety. The software and hardware are not mutually exclusive.

Paul went on to define warranty invalidating software as
anything that roots the device is banned.

I did expain that the Excel is supplied already pre rooted with Busybox installed, but Paul did not accept that was the case.

So there you go, if you install CWM or or any other 'rooting' software, you invalidate the Excel's warranty in total.

Regards

Excel

Have they not even got an Excel themselves to confirm what your saying is true? Which it is obviously.
Things like this wind me up.

So I take it, they are still saying that the Excel isn't rooted etc.
Are they blind?
They only need to actually use one to know.
So to SO Support (lol) I say this.
Switch on an Excel, and install Ad-Free Android.
It it wasn't rooted, this would not work. And neither would Titanium Backup. Oh look, they do work.
Ridiculous.
Thanks for trying @Excel

Thanks @blueeagle69... sometimes the frustration of dealing with SO feels like bashing your head against a wall.

It's a shame that SO are not more accommodating like other suppliers... if they were, poor @wickedweasel would not be having to jump through hoops https://scrolltabletforum.sevo.uk/site/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2249 to get an Excel back to stock because of what's most likely to be a hardware issue.

Poor sod. We shouldn't have to do things like this. Regardless of now having ICS. It wouldn't be difficult to offer an update.zip on their site, or available on request. Their argument that they wouldn't be able to cope with all the support requests when people flash the wrong firmware is somewhat weak. Give us a little credit. Like I have said in the past. If it wasn't for this forum, there would be quite a few disgruntled Excel owners out there. Including yours truly.
A great tablet (thanks to ICS) let down by shocking support.

Also what about the accidental mess up? Someone could download and install a 'root' app that messes up their Excel.

For example: Someone might see SetCPU (don't use it on an Excel - It WILL mess it up) and think "that looks good, I'm going to try that" and maybe they even see that it requires 'Root' - There are a lot of people that have no idea what 'Root' is (I for one didn't when I was new to Android) and BANG, their Excel is broken - Just because of an app and they were not even trying to 'Root' the device (as it is already rooted) but would probably not even realise that and still have no idea what 'Root' is but have inadvertently busted their Scroll.

Exactly mate.
I haven't seen many apps that state "installing this will invalidate your warranty".
Crazy.
