USB->Serial drivers

Postby RichardP » April 12th, 2011, 8:54 am

Hi All,

Attached http://rapidshare.com/files/457039782/U ... IAL_2_.zip is the Driver pack for the PL2303, FDTI and other USB Serial devices.

Copy to Scroll and unpack.. using root access, run insmod <module.ko> and plug in the USB serial device. A new node should be present /dev/ttyUSB0 (or more). A Serial test application is in the zip file too.

Kudos to the SlateDroid guys for the compiled drivers.

To make GPS integration work, you need to setprop ro.kernel.android.gps ttyUSB0 (It is commented out in /init.tcc92xx.rc and I have no idea howt to make it read-write so I can make the changes permanent)

I tried with GPSStatus application and my USB->serial device flashed its lights :-P .. (I dont have a USB/Serial GPS device to try)

Any chance you could repost the file? Rapidshare reports "Unassigned file limit of 10 downloads reached"

Thanks Richard,

It was mainly the serial port test program I was looking for, as I've already build the PL2303 module and managed to install it temporarily - just need a way to test whether anything is coming out of the GPS! I'm still not sure whether the Scroll has the rest of the Android s/w needed to implement the GPS location provider, but I have an old Microsoft USB SiRFIII device so I thought I'd give it a go!

I think you'll need to modify the boot image to permanently change the init.tcc92xx.rc file. Although it's pretty easy to remount the root filesystem as rw, (e.g. assuming you're rooted and have busybox you can try "busybox mount -o remount rootfs /") any changes will still get trashed when you reboot the system. I'm playing around with some tools to modify the boot image, so I'll let you know if I make any progress.

Bloggs,

Does a USB hub work on your scroll? (connected to the OTG port)

I hadn't tried to use one, but I happened to have a USB keyboard and a cheap USB 2.0 hub lying beside me. I connected the keyboard and my USB GPS to the Scroll via the hub and it all works fine. I can type quite happily with the keyboard and can even see NMEA sentences coming from the GPS (progress !! :o )

huge respect to you guy's on this. I wish i understood half of it ;)
if you actually manage to get proper communication to things like USB-GPS devices in a usable form that would be superb
they you would just be asked to explain it to idiots like me so we could copy you ;D

I'm very interested in this because I have built a number of control and data collecting devices that use Serial-over-USB as an interface. These use clear ASCII data so they can be read using a simple terminal program and I've been using them with Linux and Windows Mobile, but it would be great to get something working on an Android tablet.

I have a Scroll Essential that I bought really to play with and I've tried some of the stuff above, but I'm getting errors when I try to 'insmod' that I'll need to figure out. Any clues anyone?

I think to get the kernel modules to be persistent they would need to be added to the ROM image and I have tried that as well (using the XDA-DEV Kitchen), but am having signature problems with that when I try to flash the new ROM.

Anyone have any more information on getting this to work?
