Hello with a question

Postby baldpaul » March 20th, 2011, 8:41 am

Hi All

Had my scroll for 2 days now, secondhand from ebay. I've been looking through the forum for a few days before it arrived and all day yesterday getting up to speed with things.

I am up to the following point: Rooted my scroll, renamed the PMT apps, Android Market all working and downloaded a few apps including App Killer to control unwanted apps running "behind the scenes". To come is the clockworkmod recovery and the build.prop alterations....leave those till later today I think as my wife isn't too happy with the amount of time I'm spending with it ;-)

The one thing that I can't find much reference to on the site is keeping Gmail secure such that it asks for a password to your email account when you access it.

When I got the scroll, the previous owner didn't wipe everything off it and when I first went into Gmail I had access to all his emails (including some highly confidential ones!). I decided to do a factory reset to get rid of everything but when I set up my own email account, each time I go into gmail it just takes me to all my emails without any kind of security check. If the device was ever stolen I'm worried about leaving myself so exposed.

Is there a way to prompt for an email password when going into either of the 2 email apps? Any help much appreciated.

As a matter of interest, I renamed my PMT apps using the Terminal Emulator installed as part of the "Rooting" process. Loaded it and typed the following:

su (to change to super user)
cd /system/app (to change to the directory where the apps are)
mv Phone.apk Phone.old (rename Phone.apk, Linux is case senesitive so have to use uppercase P)
RESTART
Back into Terminal Emulator repeat first 2 steps above
mv Mms.apk Mms.old (remember to get case right)
mv TelephonyProvider.apk TelephonyProvider.old (remember to get case right)
RESTART

Cheers
Paul

Welcome to the froum; you can use Application Protector Pro to password control applications including
Gamil.

OK, that's great, thanks for the advice.

I'd realised after a bit of searching around the 'net that Gmail on any android device works this way and has no inbuilt way to do it.

I will take a look at the app and give it a go.

Cheers
