Problem connecting

Postby grumpyoldgit » March 5th, 2011, 12:37 pm

After problems with first Scroll (It was a brick straight out of the box) I now have a replacement.
I switched it on for the first time last night to have a play but had problems with connection. I had limited connectivity and it tended to drop connections while loading pages. I put this down to being in a room a little way from the router so was not too bothered. The thing is, though I was getting poor connectivity I was getting something.

This morning I am now looking at the beast seriously but am having difficulty making any connection at all, sitting right next to the router. It keeps scanning but that is it. It keeps ending up saying disconnected.
I have tried giving the Scroll a static IP address and even switching off security but no success.
I am back on DHCP with WPA-PSK security broadcasting on channel 2 in mixed mode, though I have separately tried b and g.
Any ideas?

I went to a friends house tonight.
He had WEP security on his router.
I just tapped in the code and it went straight in.
Still unable to access internet via my router whether WPA is enabled or disabled.

Ok, we need to go a bit deeper with this.....

Could you please post your router make/model and firmware version?

A bit of further information.
I googled issues people had had with any android tablets in getting connected. Things mentioned included the SSID of the router, the wireless channel used and whether the firewall on the router is switched on.
To simplify matters I have switched off security. I then changed the SSID, changed the wireless channel to manual and selected 4 and switched off the firewall. The Scroll went straight in with no problem at all. So far, so good.
I went to bed, switched on my bedside Pure Siesta Flow which has internet access and changed the details to select the new SSID. Still OK.
Then tried out the Scroll again. Unable to connect.
Switched off Pure at wall. Still unable to connect.
This morning I have left the radio switched off but changed the SSID again. Now able to connect.
Scratching my head what to do next as the radio cost £100 and I don't really want to keep changing the SSID.

I am with Tiscalli and they provided the router, which is a Siemens Gigaset SE587 WLAN dsi The firmware is v3.01.19A which I gather from discussions on other boards is the latest.

When you can connect the scroll, if you power the scroll off and on again does it reconnect okay second time?
I had lots of problems with scroll being unable to reconnect until I changed the router (not the same one as yours), it had nothing to do with SSID or channel or static vs dynamic IP.

I spent yesterday using the Scroll with no problems but with my Pure Siesta Flow radio switched off.
I listened to the radio this morning and as suspected was not able to use the Scroll.
With the radio switched off I eventually got a signal for the Scroll. It helped that I turned the router off and on so that the Scroll started searching again.
It is a workround but obviously not ideal.
I noted that the Pure had an IP of 192.168.1.5 and the Scroll is 192.168.1.2.
Interestingly, in the DHCP Server Active IP/MAC Table, both the Pure and the Scroll are given a host name of d7. I am not sure whether that is significant. In the PC world, two units with the same name would be a definite issue. Certainly, I don't see a way in either for the host name to be changed.

Incidentally, I am finding I don't need to change the SSID. I think the issue was that the damn thing was spending so much time pootling around scanning every router in the neighbourhood I was giving up. It is odd that, though I live in a village so any other routers are so far away there is absolutely no chance that a connection will be made, the Scroll finds them and insists in going through the motions, while ignoring my router that is jumping up and down saying "Pick Me, Pick Meeeeeee"

Grumpy

You can sometimes get issues with wifi routers being on the same channel interfering with each other. Have you tried changing channels on the router?
