Ok, seems like I've got to start thinking again ????
With the market/playstore app installed and you having registered with Gmail it usually takes about 24 hours for the Google servers to actually register your device. The first thing I probably would have expected is for the market/play app (bearing in mind you are on Froyo) to tell you there is an update for the app.
However, if you can't download anything from the Playstore then it can't update anyway.
Then there is the usual issue of Google licensing your device - usually (there are exceptions) the device only gets the Google market/playstore app in its build if it is licensed ???
Now bearing in mind that I am used to Ice cream sandwich and know virtually nothing about Froyo I can tell you what I think but perhaps not how to carry out certain actions on Froyo. I am assuming (which is always dangerous) that you need to add an account on the tablet. I know that on ICS you go: system/Accounts & sync then choose "add acount" where you then enter your Gmail details. I guess you are looking for something similar in Froyo.
Have a root around and see if you can find anything similar in Froyo. Once these details have been input on the tablet you should (hopefully) be able to get Playstore working fully.
Page 345 on this link tells you similar:

By the way I am going to retitle this thread with a more accurate descriptive title to help others - hope you don't mind.
