That's because you are allowing Windows to automatically search for the drivers. You need to choose to manually update and then browse to where the usb drivers are located - select them and then tell windows to install them. You may get the warning that the drivers are not approved - this is normal just go ahead and install anyway.
I had a look at the usb driver download link in this thread and you will need to unzip it to unpack the inf file after the download. When you manually update your usb drivers with the exclamation mark - browse to where you have unpacked the .inf file and select it for the update.
If after this procedure you still have an exclamation mark against the device then these are the wrong drivers for your CM9 device.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

I downloaded zip and extracted to folder on Desktop.
Tried to manually update by browsing to folder with sub directories ticked, not able to select .inf directly
Windows has deterimined your driver is uptodate message
Still explanation mark

My PC is Win7 Home Premium 32 Bit

OK then - I did have my doubts as there was only an inf file in that zip file although others say that is what they used?
I have hosted these for you to try: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/62587913/usb_driver.zip which are drivers that might work (no guarantees) download the zip as before. As you are running win 7 32bit browse to the i386 folder and try from there.

Thanks for your continued help on this.

Same result, am I missing something here? Does the tablet need to be attached by usb when installing?

Yes it does. Think about a new graphics card... you don't install the drivers first do you.

Thanks for your reply.

I have returned my tablet under warranty as the case it damaged around the headphone socket so am unable to install the updated driver until I get it back.

Given I can successfully install the updated driver I seem to have options to recover my CM9 rom

1. Follow barry17 approach to see if I can get the tablet to reboot into CWM and hence restore CM9 from backup.
2. Use Livesuit to install Stock image and then install CWM and CM9

Question can Livesuit be used to install CWM or is it an alternative to CWM? if it can

3. Use Livesuit to install CWM and hence restore CM9 from backup.

1. If you can get back into CWM and your backup - then yes.

2. If you can get your hands on a stock rom then yes, yes and yes

3. I don't believe you can instal CWM this way but this takes you back to no 1.

Regarding your unnumbereed question about Livesuite and CWM you usually use one or the other but thet are different utilities. have a look here: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2757#p22274

Chances are if your tablet is viewed as faulty by your supplier then they might just send you a new one then you must decide do you want to get on this roundabout again or simply enjoy what you get back for a while. ;)

As you suggested Storage Options rplaced my Extreme but with an Elite.

Unfortunately like my first Extreme which had to be replaced because the screen had dirt under the glass, this one has the same fault and will have to go back. I need not notice it until I had set it up with all my apps and rebuilt my Home Screen.

SO confirmed it is not possible for me to save the existing image and reflash the replacement so I guess I will have to do it again.

I have noticed that battery drain is greater than the Extreme. Settings/Battery shows what is consuming the battery and Cell Standby shows the highest %age. Given it has no Cell capability not sure what it is showing and can find no setting to switch it off. Read on some forum that using ES File Explorer use can delete/rename phone.apk and t other associated apk's but I think all that does is remove the entry also read that the useage displayed is not actual useage anyway. Do you have any experience of this issue? SO support guy says he will flag it up to their Tech Support.

Now I have a tablet back I retried to connect using USB.
On my Win7 32bit PC I get a malfuction message after it has been connected for a few mins so I have tried on my Win XP 32bit PC.
Both the SD card and the internal storage are seen but in Device Manager I get under Other Devices - Android with exclamation mark - The Drivers for this Device are not Installed. I tried browsing to the drivers you provided but with no success, Is this possibly because the Elite requires something different?

I orginally needed this to use Livesuit or force reboot into CWM but given I now have to start from scratch on the Elite do I need to resolve it?

Finally, do you know if the keys for booting into CWM Recovery the same as the Extreme?

I may well hold off reflashing ROM until CM10 is available and stable but want to be ready.

Regards

PS. I noticed your link to iview 760tpc on Youtube and found that very interesting, is there anyone doing similar scripting for the Scroll?

You have covered a lot of information/questions in this post but I will do my best to answer them.

1. The Elite has 16Gb DDR3 memory whereas the Extreme only has 8Gb DDR3 memory.

2. Unfortunately, dirt under the glass appears to be quite common - what does vary though is people's threshold on what is acceptible and what is not. Static appears to draw particles onto the screen which may get in through the gaps around the buttons and ports.

3. I don't think anyone has yet been able to extract a stock image for either the Elite or the Extreme. Suggsy89 did manage to obtain a stock image for the Yarvick equivalent of the Extreme which he hosted on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2516 but unfortunately the link no longer works.

4. Storage Options have repeatedly stated that if you install clockwork mod and flash a custom rom then you have broken the terms of their warranty. Some people have challenged this but Stoarge Options remain adamant. So if you flash a custom rom and brick your tablet - Storage Options may not accept it back.

5. The battery capacity for the Extreme is rated by Storage Options as Super Low Power Consumption 7800mAH. Whereas the Elite states Long Life Li-Polymer Rechargeable Battery There may a difference which could be better or worse and as it is not stated I would imagine worse.

6. Using ES file explorer to delete system files (like phone.apk) can get you into a lot of trouble if you don't fully understand what you are doing. Each rom is unique and although some system apps like phone.apk may appear redundant some roms may expect them to be there and might throw a bootloop if they can't find them on startup.
Yes the OS can be slimmed and cleaned up but you simply can't dive in and delete system files without knowing how they interact with the system first. I am afraid I can't advise you any more on this matter and if you do decide to strip out some apparently redundant system files then you do so entirely at your own risk.

7. Connecting your tablet to your PC via usb is always driver specific and android OS specific for each device. Consequently, as example - if you change your OS from ICS to Jellybean then after flashing it is quite likely that your PC will no longer see the device (i.e. exclamation mark in device manager ) because the installed drivers were for ICS. Usually you have to search for the corrct drivers for your device and tablet OS and as you have allready found out there are differences between Win 7 and Win XP - also you need different drivers for 32 bit and 64 bit Windows OS's. It is worth remembering that if you are flashing a custom rom you need to find the right usb drivers as well and install them manually from device manager - choosing update drivers from the options dialogue

8. Regarding getting CWM on the Elite I know that the buttons don't map the same as the Extreme but mcevoyt managed this in this thread viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2900&hilit=elite+CWM

9. The video on YouTube for flashing roms is useful as a guide as the same process is used for virtually any android tablet - and no there is no video available (yet) for how to use livesuite just on Scroll tablets.
