Another Excell clone!!

Postby justb » July 19th, 2012, 9:52 am

My Friend just got one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Android-SANDWIC ... 341&sr=8-3

It's actually really good, it's like a refined excell. White back, but the edges are completely smooth and very nice to hold. the buttons are touch on the bottom bezel, so shouldent get so much dust in there. An there is a slightly different design at the bottom that is a-symetrical.

Looks very nice and is a great price too, but how good is their version of ICS, that is the big question.

I must say it looks quite good but there are some apparent differences between this and the Excel.
Cambridge Sciences have been renowned for quality technical R&D since the 1970's so I don't see this as being another box built import. The buttons, as you say are touch type on the bezel which is better than the Excel. Also the spec claims a 500Mhz GPU with no indication as to whether it is multicore like the 400Mhz Mali GPU in the Excel.
Unfortunately, whilst there are some good reviews on Amazon, the ones that complain are scathing claiming next to no customer service and several units displaying the same battery charging faults.
However, this means little when you see how many Extremes have needed to be replaced by Storage Options.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

I don't think this is the "Cambridge Sciences" of Clive Sinclair fame - have a look at :

Try Googling Cambridge Sciences for a company website.

Nice catch there BobC - I thought it was these folk here: http://www.cambridgesciencepark.co.uk/
Well that would certainly answer the question of the poor reviews as everything I have always previously bought with the Cambridge Science badge has always been first class.

PS: Clive SInclair ?? Now you are giving your age away - did you every buy a C3?

No, but I did buy one of his very early "Micromatic" FM radios when it was Sinclair Radionics. Apparently his later company was "Science of Cambridge" and it looks like someone is making use of the "Science" and "Cambridge" style to give their company the air of history that you assumed they had.

And, if I'm not mistaken, my age can be viewed in my profile should anyone be remotely interested.

I had a quick play with it, it seemed faster than my Excell. Scrolling, opening settings etc. Not much on it though so may be a bit slower when full.

Android looks exactly the same to me, but didn't have that long with it. For the price it's a steal.
