How to connect WIFI (was - Sorry for posting this, but...)

Postby MLP1 » May 19th, 2012, 12:32 pm

I DID a search, in fact I did more than one, but what I get doesn't help. In particular, some of the hits say "oh, this has already been answered elsewhere, do a search" which is just confusing things further!

If a newbie like myself asks a question that looks like deja-vu to the established members, please remember that to you it may be old hat, but to many of us it's like chinese and hebrew combined, at the very least, please provide a link towards the right thread? Pretty please?

Here goes: I've had my Scroll Extreme for about 2 weeks now, it was absolutely fine to start with, but in the last few days, the Wi-fi connection has been going round in circle, searching, connecting (but not really), not in range, searching, etc... and getting absolutely nowhere. :(

I thought my tablet might be faulty, but the search here shows to me that it seems to be a common problem, what I can't find is the solution, is there a Dummies' guide to how to sort it out somewhere? :)

Thanks in advance for nice, simple and informative replies. ;)

hi the best thing to do is downloas wifi analyser from market then use the app to see if all your neighbours are using the same channel as you
if all the signals are piled on top of each other you may have to change the channel number on you router(google)
or if its sky router
on pc
http//192.168.1.1 username admin password admin change the chanel to an empty one there channe 4 did not see my laptop so went to six and everything works good
WHAT DO WE WANT?
A TIME MACHINE!
WHEN DO WE WANT IT?
IT DOESN'T MATTER

Ah, that kind of makes sense, as it started mucking about after I travelled to Oxford and back the other days and was either tethering to my phone or on my brother's network... Thanks will give that a try, will let you know if that paid off. :)

FAN-TAS-TIC!

I don't even know what it did but as soon as I installed it, the Internet came back on, steady as a rock! Thank you SO much! :D :D :D

If anyone finds this post browsing along, the only issue I had was that as I couldn't get the internet to work on my tablet at all, I just hooked it up to my laptop via USB andlet Google Play find my tablet (and my phone!), install it and ta-dah! Incredible. :D

Did you try Mitre's suggestion? if not you can get a free download for your PC from here: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
inssider gives you a good graphical interface of the wifi activity in your immediate location so you can easily identify and avoid the busy channels and choose a less busy one for yourself as Mitre suggested. Let us know how you get on and if this doesn't work, how you cured it.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

I have had my Scroll Excel 7" Tablet for about 6 weeks and I have tried and tried and tried to connect to the internet. I have been to friends houses in case I had a fault with my BT Home Hub, but still could not get a connection. When I go into Settings, I can see BTHomeHub2-6NRW and there is a lock on it and it would not connect no matter how many times I tried. I was about to send it back when I decided to do something else. I went to the bottom of the screen and clicked "Add Wi-Fi network". It asked me to type in my "Network SSID", then in "Security", I clicked "WPA/WPA2PSK".
Now add the Hub's Password from the back of Hub. Now press Save. I now have 2 of BTHomeHub2-6NRW on my list and the WiFi will now connect to my second HomeHub. Underneath the Hub sign it should say "Remembered". That is the one Scroll will use. I am also registered with BTFon and it also has "Remembered" underneath, but I haven't been outside to test it yet.
This one worked for me. However, there has to be a better way of connecting to get started.

What you have described are the necessary actions to connect any device to your router, you can usually also increase your security by adding a list of devices by their mac addresess and limit access to only those on the list. Sometimes people forget they have activated their mac identifier only list and then cannot connect a new device until they add the devices mac address also to the list or turn device ID only off. As you have discovered, you don't need just your SSID but also you must match your security type as well.

Thanks for replying to my comment. I think the makers of Scroll Excel should give better instructions on how to connect to the internet by Wi-Fi. Why? Because too many users are having the same problem.
