Cannot use BT Fon or Openzone

Postby davesch » April 12th, 2012, 9:28 pm

If I tell the Excel to connect to a Fon or Openzone site, it says connected and shows the wi-fi signal in white rather than green. I'd expect then to log in via the Fon App or BT Openzone Home Page.

If I run the BT Fon app, it tries to connect but tells me I need to be connected to the internet and fails.

If i try to load a website using the web browser, I'd expect it to automatically take me to the BT Openzone login as does my iPhone or Laptop, instead, it just fails to connect, as it does if I manually try to go the the Openzone site.

Can anyone please advise ?

This may be a long shot but have you actually ever got the BT FON app to work at all on your Excel?
To be able to use BT FON on your Excel the app needs to be registered and I just wondered that to do that do you need to be allready connected to a working wifi network -(i.e. does the wifi indicator need to be green - a white indicator simply indicates the Excel is WIFI enabled but not connected to a network)

I am not a BT FON client/customer but I can also trigger White wifi icon on my Excel when in range of Openzone or FON signals.

I lifted this from the BT FON app instructions I have highlighted something that makes me thing your app is not working as it should. An updated app was released 30th Jan 2012, is this later than yours?

How to use for the first time:
1. Download and open the app. Confirm that you are a ‘BT Broadband Customer’, select ‘Set Up Now’ and then type in your BT internet email address and password, accept the terms and conditions and click on Activate.
2. This will automatically opt you in for BT Fon.
3. Now your settings are entered you’re ready to connect. By pressing activate, this will automatically take you to the connection screen.
4. PLEASE NOTE: you can set up the app to auto-login when in a BT hotspot so you will connect automatically too!

How to use subsequently:
1. Please ensure your wi-fi is enabled and you are in range of a hotspot
2. The app is set to auto connect, so when you are in a BT hotspot you will connect automatically without having to do anything!
3. You can start to use your free, unlimited wi-fi

You probably have allready done all this and if you have then I am sorry but thought I would post this long-shot.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

I can't be sure if it ever did work, today was the first time I needed to use it on the road. The settings seem correct and it doesn't come up with anything about confirming being a BT Broadband Customer.

Even if that doesn't work ( and if BT Fon wasn't installed ), the browser should take me to the login screen for BT Openzone, but that doesn't happen

I hear what you are sayiing but as you also say you never got a green online wifi icon it seems to me you were never actually on-line so when you were in roaming mode away from home the browser window might have simply appeared active from its cache. It may be worth uninstalling the app and re-installing the latest version and then go through the app activation steps above again from home where you know your network will definitely be live just in case the app needs to call home to activate itself. (sounds daft I know bit like chicken and egg really.)

There is one of these hotspots in range of my flat, it barely ever works even with a decent signal strength.

I am not a BT Internet customer, but on holiday recently I was just in range of a BTFON hotspot. My Scroll Excel connected OK with no problems (do this with settings/Wifi) I then had to pay for the service, but it worked OK for me. I don't have any BTFON App - seems to work by just connecting without an App.
