might be a silly question but .....

Postby bristep » April 10th, 2012, 3:05 pm

Maybe I'm paranoid, but my Excel has started making a noise as though its trying to access a disc drive ! There's a constant fairly quiet "whirring" noise all the time, even on standby. I've tried closing all running apps. To be fair, it may have always made this noise & I've only just noticed it, in which case I need reassuring, but all ideas & suggestions gratefully received. Many thanks

Honestly, I've no idea... Humorously.... I think it is probably the CPU cooling fan.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Many thanks, thought it could be the water cooled graphics card.

What are you two taking about, it's none of those. It's the flux capacitor making that noise.

Yes, but only on special order request and there is a 5 year wait.

As for the noise - I can only think that it could be related to the speaker or screen if at all & both are very long shots. AFAIK there are no moving parts in side the Excel. Not hearing anything on my Excel, I take it you are still on GB?

Loved the pic ! Yep, still on GB. Did guess it may have been the speaker, so plugged headphones in. Little tinker was still whispering away, so screen may be next idea. Just very surprised its there when its on standby and screen is blank. Its only 3/4 months old, do may take it back & see what the shop says. Would like to try ICS, but I'd need a complete duffers guide as I'm a geriatric and still struggle to program my betamax video recorder. I thought the scroll may have needed a thorough cleanup to get rid of the noise. Do you think putting it into the dishwasher may have something to do with my problem ? BTW, going to pinch that picture - its still making me laugh
