[Review] TIME2 7" Black Leather Look Case + Keyboard

Postby Wully » January 23rd, 2012, 4:05 pm

Hello everyone,

This is a review of the TIME2 7" Black Leather Look Case + Keyboard.
I got it from amazon.co.uk for £13.21 it has just arrived on the 23rd of January.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005NHQSCO

The features given on amazon:

  • The perfect accessory for your 7" device. A stylish leather-look case with stand, perfect for shielding your new Tablet PC against dust, shocks, bumps, scrapes and scratches from day-to-day use
  • The case comes with a fully integrated QWERTY keyboard, integrated mini USB Port and a USB connector to plug into your Tablet PC for quick, easy typing
  • The keyboard is powered by your tablet (so there is no need to charge the keyboard), this allows you to work on the go, whenever & wherever
  • Safely slide your Tablet PC device in and out of your briefcase/handbag or luggage with ease or even carry alone!
  • Also allows easy access to all Ports, Hard buttons, speakers and headphone jack

To start off with the Case arrived inside a plastic wrap within a bubblewrap lined envelope to stop it from getting scratched of damaged. No signs of damage! Good work amazon!

After opening it, a small USB Cable fell out, a USB A to Mini USB A, The cable itself is a decent length and is very flexible.
Because of the lack of thicker insulation around the wires they may succumb to being pinched if your not careful.

Though because its not Mini USB A to Mini USB A (If they exist?), we still need to use our adapter that comes with the excel to connect the keyboard to the Scroll, this unfortunately adds extra length and looks a bit messy.

The case itself.

The build quality of the case feels excellent. The stitching of the fake leather adds to its appealing look.
The fake leather feels rough & sturdy but wouldn't scratch your Scroll.
There is a magnetic clip to hold the case closed which works very well.
The joints where the case opens and closes are thick and don't feel flimsy. I was able to open the case all the way around so I could still use the Scroll as a tablet. Though in normal use I would just take the tablet out the case!

The adjustable mechanism works by moving the two bottom clips down. These are on springs which spring back to lock the Scroll in place. I was surprised how stable it holds it in place. And when the case is closed the tablet doesn't slide about at all.

Image

One of my fears about the case was if the tablet would slide out the side. The spring adjusted clips hold it in place perfectly.
The case doesn't adds quite a lot to the overall thickness, nothing too thick I'd say though.

The stand

The case has a stand to keep your Scroll at a 45 degree angle for using the keyboard on a desk.

There is a strip of material at the back of the case that can fold out to be used as a stand, when its not being used it fold back and clips onto the back of the case again using a small magnet.

It adequately holds the screen up, however one improvement would be if there was a clip or something to hold the stand open because if you slide the case back on the desk the stand folds in.

The stylus
The case also comes with a stylus for manipulating the screen. I wouldn't say this is needed for us as the Excels have capacitive screens and I have a phobia of using anything other than my finger to select something on the screen for fear of scratching it. :?
The stylus slots into a small pocket in the hinge of the case, securing it rather well. I haven't even taken it out.. Until now!

Image

It looks like any generic Nintendo DS stylus. It works fine on the screen, but in my opinion its not needed as we have our magic fingers!

The Keyboard

They keyboard has an American layout, some things won't be where you expect them. But the keyboard is easy to use. The keys are responsive, with a build quality you would expect in notebook computers. Those with larger hands like myself, some keys are a bit too small. The arrow keys suffer from this when trying to move through folders/links on a webpage/files on the Scroll. Finding the Enter key can be frustrating. Though I have been using my Scroll at night in bed to watch movies so go figure.

From another thread I have discovered:

Pressing Esc = Back Button
Pressing F1/F10 = Menu button
Pressing F3 = Possibly Home button but it crashes the android launcher and I need to restart the Scroll
Pressing F4 = Lock/Unlock
Pressing the Home key (Fn + Left Arrow) = Home Button

In the default Android Browser:
Pressing Spacebar = Scroll down
Pressing Shift+Spacebar = Scroll Up
Pressing shift on a selected link = Copys text to clipboard
Pressing shift = Mouse cursor appears!
Arrow buttons = Cycle through links on a page/Move mouse cursor

Still no key found for "left click" unfortunately :(

Great review so far Wully - Thanks,

I have the older version of that case that only fits the 1st gen Scroll. - The new one you have, looks like it has been improved a lot.

Yes I would recommend it for daily use, I'm using it for typing notes in uni.

The only issue is the keys are on the small side, it is also an american keyboard, so things like " and @ are swapped positions on the keyboard.

They keys don't feel flimsy or anything, the entire build quality of the case is very good.

Is it possible to use the case as a stand?

Was going to order this but it seems to be out of stock at the moment and only the cheaper non adjustable version at £7.99 is available.
Think ill wait until the new version comes in stock.
Good review Wully and good pics.

Hi - many thanks for the review, I intend getting one of these when back in stock. Can I ask a silly question? In the list of key ops listed above you list the spacebar as giving scroll down? OK - here's the silly bit - how then do you actually get a space when typing? (don't be harsh - new to this tablet lark:-)

@Starwatcher

If you don't have a text box selected and your just viewing a page, the page scrolls down when pressing spacebar, just like in your desktop browser.
