Video playback issues

As a newbie here, just a vote of thanks to Paul/Storage Options. It’s very encouraging to see that you are looking at the problem actively and are posting here.
I'm seriously pleased with my new toy. Given its price, it has massively surpassed my expectations. I do hope you can get this issue sorted, as it’s the only area I have qualify my recommendation to my mates to go and buy one. Even so one or two of them are getting bored listening to me about how much I like it...

I'd agree Jimbo apart from the video issue, and from what Paul said, it may be we need to look more carefully at our conversion methods etc.

What surprises me is that apart from the Gadget Show review, I've seen very little press about this device. There's plenty of people talking about the Kindle Fire being the iPad killer, but you can't get the darn thing in the UK, and from what I've read, that doesn't seem to be without it's own problems.

I have been thinking about this, I wonder if playback would be better in H.264 in mkv (xvid in mp4 could be good too).
If someone with an Excel could test this theory, that would be great - Also anyone tried playback with VLC media player?


It seems to be a problem with a lot of Android devices playing back videos with h264 streams in mp4 or avi containers.

Just found this on another forum - not sure, what they mean, but its might be worth someone trying it.

I have noticed this on iPlayer too - i fix it by tapping the button with 2 triangles - sometimes i need to tap it twice but it causes the video to refresh almost putting the audio and video in sync.

I think they mean the "button with the two triangles" is the fast forward or rewind?

Sometimes you can get a video back into sync but fast forwarding, or repositioning it with the slider. Maybe that would help on iPlayer, not sure.

Its sometimes helps on other video player apps, I think because the audio and video streams are reset at that point.

OK Guys Following Paul of OS post I am not out my depth!!! Would be grateful if someone could take the time reply to my points below and appologise for my lack of understanding!

He says its illegal to copy DVDs that you own into MPEG4 format so where do you get any movies from?

The manual and info says the device will play MPEG4 ( amounst others) format doesnt mention anything about not being in sync? Is it the original DVD or the way that you copy ( the software that you use) the DVD in to MPEG4 the problem?

Can anybody recommend how they convert to achieve the best result.?

Can anybody suggest what works in terms of movies on the device?


Thanks again I just want to put a couple of movies on the thing for the kids when we are in the car, as all the promotional suff says you can do.

It's also illegal to drive at 31 mph in a 30 zone, and downloading from torrents is a bit dubious too.
Me - I wouldn't ever do any thing so totally evil, and definately I wouldn't post on a public forum representing my employer any suggestion of such a thing

A lot of questions for me here - I will try and give answers to them all, but it might not be tonight.

I used MP4 as an example only - the device supports all the containers that are in the spec. It's the standards compliance that's the important bit.

Got all the guides and info I think you will need to get the most of the video functionality of the Scroll and all this codec and container nonsense (hint STEEP LEARNING CURVE for Paul, thank god we have a total video geek working here (Chris if any of you have spoken to him on the help desk)).

We're still looking at this iPlayer issue - we haven't given up yet. Yes there is a limit to what we can do but we will try our best (within the bounds of the law ).

Can I just add - it's so gratifying that almost everyone we're speaking to qualifies their problem with "I'm pleased with the device" or "it's meeting / surpassing my expectations".

Agreed.. I can't get over how fast gameplay is.
I one small grip though.
Whenever I'm touching the bottom half of the screen (near the buttons), the screen discolours, but not anywhere near, where I'm touching. It also does it when I'm using the hard buttons, volume etc. Again, nowhere near the buttons I'm pressing.
And lastly. A very small area of the screen (not near the edge) shows up as a bright spot. This shows up on a plain background. On a screen with a white background, it shows up even brighter. It's been there since day one, but I have been trying to ignore it. It's only a very small area, but it catches my eye, when I'm browsing the web, and is rather annoying.
I have had my Excel since December 23rd, and has become vital. It hasn't left my side since
Almost forgot. Is it normal for the rather brilliant CPU to show 1.2ghz? Any system tool I tried, reports this.

Ok after much trial and error using a couple of converter programs I've found a way to convert video into the correct format that works for me on my Excel. I still don't believe we should have to do this and feel that many of the avi we have should work. However this is a good work around and will allow you to play your own content on our devices.

First off you need a free converter program, the one that worked for me is Free Video to Android Converter

After installation you can just drop your video into the window then select the device to convert to, I chose the one that had Samsung Galaxy S, Dell Streak 7, etc because it matched our screen resolution, I picked standard quality, then convert.

Played perfectly.

Played it through moboplayer.
