Slight concern

Postby HairyLurker » July 18th, 2011, 12:15 pm

Hi all.

I've found the "how to root" thread (two of) and read through them. I've ordered a MicroSD card (probably a naff one, but we'll wait and see) and downloaded the z4root and... The other one. But I'm slightly concerned about doing this. I've never done it before and can only liken it to erasing windows from a PC. Is that an accurate assessment?

Also, once it's rooted (touch wood), do I then have to get a new "OS" to run everything? And how would that then be installed?

Apologies if this is a regular question and I just couldn't find it in the search bar.

Further apologies for not knowing the jargon.

Rooting only makes slight changes to the operating system, it adds busy-box and superuser app.
It adds super-user permissions allowing you to modify the system, overclock, custom recovery, basically what ever you want.
You will not need to load a new OS.. if you do this though, you may lose root.

You have been warned!

Best way to describe root is.....lemme see now.

The difference between a "limited" and "administrator" account on a Windows PC :D

Employees are like mules. Some you stand in front of and coax them along with a carrot. Some you stand behind and kick them in the arse. The key to management is knowing which mules are which!

Hey Hairy. relax. i was concerned too for much the same reasons but i have rooted 2 scrolls now and its fine, just follow the instructions carefully and its pretty much impossible to brick your tablet. The rooting only gives you the ability to change things that you could not change before, it {as fonefixer said] gives you administrator rights insted of just user rights. the only real warnings are:
1- do not delete anything, ever. rename instead of delete
2- follow the guide on how to rename the phone-related apps so you get your battery life improved. the order that you rename them is critical.
3- backup... at least make a copy of your build.prop [you will be able to find this once you root].
4- do things one-at-a-time and check before you do anything. the clever people on this forum [not me..people who write the how-to guides etc] are so friendly and helpful you can always get advice. I am constantly amazed at how they give up time to help us technically maladroit fools to do what they manage with ease.

oh..and relax, if i can do it, any fool can do it ;)
