I am part way through making a how to for rooting the 52577 using ADB. If you get yours done first I will stop and give yours the once over, you know much more than I do about the thing.

One question...why did you choose the mtd6 folder only, is it because this is the most recent and the rest is not required?

I think you doing the right thing and it will help others...
I want to provided a link to all the files and images to rebuild the Scroll Android OS if something drastic happens when we are modding OUR version of it.
This has already been done for the Resistive Version. (Ours is the Capacitive)
I chose the mtd6 folder/file because this is the "Recovery" part of the OS
It is made up of basically 8 "layers" of software stored on the NAND chip (mtd1, mtd2, mtd3, and so on)
This is NOT how all phones/tablets are layered out though... It is just the way the Scroll is layered.... (I believe to my current knowledge)

I rooted using ADB as I was looking to try to understand (some) what I was doing. I had to re-root following installing the update and it was quite easy.

How did you root the easy way...LOL

I will finish my guide to rooting the hard way but wont post it. I will wait for your "how to".

Gents, How are you getting on with the Scroll at the moment? I rooted using SuperOneClick and have also got as far as the bootloader stuck on the Scroll screen. Have you managed to get clockworkmod recovery on the capacitive scroll? Or a working update to build.prop? Or even better the Cyanogen mod? I've been searching each of the various threads on this but they all seem to be related to the resistive scroll and have so far not played nicely with my 052577.

Any other tips for things for me to get rid of to improve performance? My CPU seems to be constantly maxed out, is this something you've found as well?

We now have a copy of the original recovery, look in this zipped file for mtd6.img, its 147mb and contains the update and all other partitions..
