I like Froyo :D Much faster than Eclair. One advantage over the latter is the ability to easily move apps to the SD card.

I had backed up my apps before updating with Appmonster to the SD card so copied them to my PC, formatted the SD and put back what I wanted. I could then re-install on the Froyo Apollo using Easy Installer, even managed to rescue Copilot :)

Again, Dave, thanks for your help.

BTW Anybody else had a go???

I am in a quandary, obviously Fonefixer is a top grade phone engineer and has the technology "nailed" in regard to this upgrade. However hopefully soon , Samdung ( not mistake ) will release Foyo through Kies at some point. I am not really a "techie" and quite honestly find all this too daunting and difficult to do, so I think I will wait. I just want to plug in my phone , connect and download the upgrade , I do not want to go around the houses with systems I am unfamiliar with. It might mean a long wait , but then again if I dont follow sequences correctly then I will be left with a door stop !!!
I am a not normally cautious in most things , but even £79 was a big outlay for me to cock-up

Dave, I have taken the liberty of "consolidating" your instructions from the various posts as follows. Please confirm that it is reasonably correct ;)

Both the files will need unpacking one level with winzip or similar. DO NOT unpack the tar files in the folder in any way. They get put in odin as they are. (in the correct place of course)

Start odin as administrator. Load the ops/phone/pda & csc files as required. Do not connect the handset to pc yet.
With the handset turned off, hold down the vol- and centre select hard keys. Then press the on/off button. The phone screen will say "downloading".
Connect it to your pc with odin already running and the files in the correct place. the com port screen (top left) will turn yellow with a com port number in it. The handset is now connected.
Click on start and watch the fun.
Leave all alone until the large window top left says "pass" (about 6-7 minutes)
Disconnect handset and do a hard reset, in the dialler screen type *2767*3855# and wait for it to reboot.

Also, one final thing, check your imei (*#06# from dialler screen) to make sure your imei is still there and you can log on to a network.

I did not need to turn off AV or FW.

AndrewW: Confirmed as reasonably correct

The procedure described above is valid for the "3 file flash" jpf rom. If you flash the "one package" jpm tar the procedure is slightly different.
Please find below an idiots guide to using odin. Its as basic as I can make it. :D

How to use ODIN

Postby Fonefixer » May 29th, 2011, 3:59 pm

Ok, so you've got the required files from somewhere on the internet ( HINT- Google "Samfirmware" or PM some guy called Fonefixer) and you want to flash your device with FroYo or downgrade it - here's how. We will use the same odin program and ops file for both but you will either have one .tar file (such as XXJPM.tar - this one is FroYo) or three ( such as I5800XXJG7_PDA_REV02_CL460190_user.tar.md5 / I5800OXXJG5-CSC-MULTI-CL447760-OXX.tar.md5 / I5800XXJG3_PHONE.tar.md5 - these are the stock eclair files for the XEU unbranded UK Apollo)

FORUM DISCLAIMER APPLIES! PLEASE READ! IF YOU'RE NOT SURE WHICH FILES TO GET, PM ME!

You will need:

PC Antivirus/ Firewall disabled.
KIES installed but NOT running (for usb drivers)
Your handset - fully charged
USB connector cable
PC - preferably a laptop so it will still work if your house power fails.
Odin_Multi_Downloader_v4.252 Program
apollo_0531.ops file
Either the one package file (ie XXJPM) or the other three to flash jpf froyo or downgrade to eclair.
Place all the above files in a folder on your desktop so you know where they are. If you see any file in the three package flash that says the word "boot" immediately delete it from your pc so there is no risk of ODIN selecting it.
NOTE: If you flash the JPM/JPF froyo KIES will not accept your handset for upgrade, youll need to re-flash eclair to upgrade via KIES again

Before you begin, remove your sim and memory card and reset your handset (in the dialler screen type *#2767*3855#). Dont forget to back up your contacts and personal data first, you will lose it all from the handset during this process.

Next, place your handset in "download mode". With it off, hold the volume down and home (centre) keys then press and hold the power key. "Downloading" will appear on the handset screen. DONT CONNECT IT YET!

Flashing with "one package" - ie XXJPM

1) Right click on the ODIN icon and left click on "run as administrator". ODIN will start
2) Look at it, all the "file select" options on the right should be blank, if not click on "reset files". Now look on the left - all the options EXCEPT debug only SHOULD be ticked - if not, tick them. The "reset time" should be 300.
3) Now look to the right again, see the OPS button? click it and navigate to the ops file you have in your desktop folder and select it. The ops file path should be shown in the window next to the ops button.
4) Now go to the bottom right of ODIN, see the "one package" button? click it and navigate to the XXJPM.tar file and select it.
5) Connect your handset to your computer, put it down and dont touch it - you dont want to risk breaking the connection during flashing.
6) See the "com port mapping" window top left? it should turn yellow with a com port number in it. The message window bottom left should say "detected".
7) Now comes the scary part - click on "start" towards the top right of ODIN , sit back and watch the fun. You'll see lots of messages in the window bottom left of ODIN. After a couple of minutes all will go quiet, dont panic its resetting the handset but dont touch anything yet!
8) After about 6-7 minutes you will see the message "destroy instant" ( dont panic - its a timer message)and "pass" in the message window. The big window above the com port one will also say "PASS" and turn green.
9) Once you see the pass message, disconnect your handset and perform the reset procedure given above (code in dialler screen)

VOILA! FroYo!

Flashing with 3 files - i.e. original eclair or jpf froyo

1) Right click on the ODIN icon and left click on "run as administrator". ODIN will start
2) Look at it, all the "file select" options on the right should be blank, if not click on "reset files". Now look on the left - only "auto reboot" and "protect ops" should be ticked (the timer will also be ticked and set to 300 but may be greyed out).
3) Now look to the right again, see the OPS button? click it and navigate to the ops file you have in your desktop folder and select it. The ops file path should be shown in the window next to the ops button.
4) Now go to the right of ODIN, under the ops button you'll see some more. DONT click or select "BOOT" or "EFS" at any time! They must remain blank. You should have three files, PHONE, PDA & CSC. Select each of the relevant buttons on odin one at a time and select the relevant file.
DOUBLE CHECK that you have put the correct file in the correct place!

VOILA! Original Eclair! or JPF FroYo!

The JPF FroYo version thats available is flashed in the same manner as the eclair one described above. (The JPF version is NOT pre-rooted)

ONE LAST POINT! IF IN DOUBT - DON'T! :D

My Froyo'd Apollo is not happy. It is not too keen on multiple apps being open and tends to freeze more frequently than with 2.1.
I have to power down to get it running again.

Also, I tried a temporary root with z4root but that wont work now :(
