Hi - new Scroll owner

Postby ChrisS » May 20th, 2011, 10:26 pm

Hi
Bought a 7in Scroll from Maplins today. Selling them at eBay prices as B-grade, so took a punt.
Mainly wanted it for holiday, load some movies on it, Kindle app, games etc for kids (and me!).

Got it running and pleasantly surprised how the screen responds. I use an iPhone every day and while I wasn't expecting that sort of responsiveness, it isn't bad.

However the Wifi is disappointing. I have to be virtually next to the wireless router to get a signal. Is this typical, or do I have a dud? I've done search, but only find wifi issues with internet dropping out mentioned.

Its running FW 1.02, baseband 1.02, kernel 2.6.29. Can anybody advise on my Wifi problem?

Chris

Thanks, but no luck with that. Tried different channels, but makes no difference. Go a range of about 5m before losing connection. My laptop/iPhone have no problem.
Next to the router (Belkin) it gets random signal strengths, so I'm beginning to think I have a hardware problem.

Sig updated.

Update - went back to Maplins and swapped for another unit. This one is fine. Wifi is excellent.
I think the original was a genuine B-grade. There was a stylus in the box, which I aasumed came as standard, but apparently not. So somebody had returned it.

Got a few apps working, and sorted out my favorite websites. Now to get some films on it.

Any tips/recommendations on how to rip DVDs on to it?

I rip my DVDs with a program called ripit4me which works with DVD Decryptor. I then convert to AVI with DVDx. I'm not sure if it's the best way and these are quite old programs but it does work.

Well I've been quite impressed with my scroll, but its let me down again. I got a micro SD delivered today, loaded some films on it then went to put it in the scroll. The card refuses to latch in the slot! If I hold it against the spring it sees the card but unfortunately it won't stay there. Looks like I'll have to take it back again.
Is there any way I can back up my settings, bookmarks etc?
