External SD Card is set to read only

Hi

Hope I'm not missing something simple, but I can't seem to find an option to change this. I can get around the problem by using the device in usb storage mode but I would like the option to transfer files over the Wlan. Any help would be appreciated

Get a cheap card reader and use it to connect your card to your PC, assuming you have a PC

Explore the contents of the card and have a look under 'properties'

Presumably the 'read only' check box will have got checked somehow. Uncheck this if relevant

If not, you may have reformat the card - after backing up your files to the PC of course!

Personally, I rarely use Bluetooth to transfer files - much quicker to use a card reader

Thanks for replying, I probably should made a more detailed first post, the problem seems to be that only Android sees the external_sd card as read only.

The card, when used on any other device (or when the evoke is connected to pc) is writeable, so no problem there. I can copy files from media server to galaxy s2 (gingerbread) over wireless using the same card no issues, so I'm assuming its got something to do with Jellybean's security settings. Is there a check box I haven't seen in settings?

Thanks

Mmm.... probably better to post this on another forum as most people here are running some form of ICS - the evoke is one of the first tablets in the UK to run JB, and this part of the forum has only recently opened. You could of course ask scroll options.

-What is the data size and class of your Sd card?
-Where did you buy it from?

The reason I ask is that it might just be a dodgy SD card and not playing nice with JB or it might be software related and you need to format the SD correctly and/or you have the wrong permissions set.

What does the following file say:

/system/etc/permissions/platform.xml

This part of the text:

Code: Select all
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
    <group gid="sdcard_rw" />
</permission>

needs to say this instead:

Code: Select all
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
    <group gid="sdcard_rw" />
    <group gid="media_rw" />
</permission>

You will need to be rooted to edit it - DO AT YOUR OWN RISK! - As a mistake could stop your tablet from booting.

Yep I found this info after a quick search too - well worth trying (BTW I would only buy class 10 cards)

Interesting, I just looked at my own micro SD card in the evoke and whilst each directory has 'drw' permissions set, every file within all of these directories is only set to '-rw'

So I presume I couldn't actually delete individual files - not that I want to atm

Curious

Hi Rainbow, just a thought to keep these threads as helpful as possible for others who read these pages.
You say you would only buy class 10 cards which without explanation as to why is an opinion which many of us know, but for those who are new may not understand why - so I have brought this link into the thread. viewtopic.php?f=48&t=3086&p=24612&hilit=claSS+10#p24549

Yes I agree, good point - it's basically all about bandwidth and therefore stuttering, mostly when viewing video

At one point I changed tablets from an Extreme to an Elite and found that some apps could no longer write to the external SD card.

A lot of digging suggested that the problem related to just how the app was trying to write to the card.

The bottom line was that either the app needed to be updated (Titanium Backup was the one that gave me most problems) or use a different app that worked (some file managers would see the storage as r/o, others would happily copy files to it).

I think it depended on the build of Android for the machine as to whether you got the problem or not.

An earlier post by Blueagle69 gives a bit more background and info viewtopic.php?t=2202
