"unfortunately google tts engine has stopped" on Scroll extr

I installed an ereader app, (FR reader) and loaded an epub in that app.
It has a Text to speech option (a plugin), which I assume uses the built in Google TTS feature.

However when I try to use that feature, I get the following error message pop up.
"unfortunately the google tts engine has stopped".

Anyone seen this before?

I have seen this on my wifes Tablo 7" - I think there are some files missing in the ROMS for TTS for some of these tablets - seems to be a common problem.

Havent managed to fix it yet.

I havent tried it on my extreme but I am using a custom rom anyway on that so it may be fixed in the rom I am using.

What version of the ROM are you using?

Sure - I will test it tonight if I get time.

I am currently using the CM9 build from Slate Droid but have used Suggsys rom too and I will probably switch to that soon. Will test on the CM9 first.

Have you tried using Coolreader - TTS works on that for me using the Extreme stock firmware, most other apps give the problem you mention. I've used both FBreader and Coolreader on a dedicated Ebookreader for some years and prefer Coolreader because I can tweak the presentation nicely using css files.

Just tested it and FB Reader works fine on the CM9 ROM. I asks which engine you want to use when you first select Speak. I only tried Google TTS engine but there was an option for Pico TTS too.

ok thanks, I tried both google tts and pico and it failed, so I guess the stock build doesn't work with TTS.
Thanks for testing it. :)

Unfortunately the coolreader doesn't work either with TTS, same error.

That's strange - I downloaded a random epub from mobileread.com and that worked fine with Coolreader.

Are you using an Extreme with out-of-the-box firmware or have you changed the ROM ?
