External Keyboard

Postby BobC » May 2nd, 2012, 2:08 pm

I have a usb keyboard attached to the Extreme via the OTG adaptor. The problem I am having is that when using a Terminal Emulator the keyboard seems to adopt a US layout (actually it's the same typing this in). The only settings I can find show the input method as an Android Keyboard with UK English layout.

Any thoughts on how to sort this out short of re-labelling the keys.

I just tried this on my Excel and it works but I'm not sure if it will work whilst you are using a terminal emulator though.
Press the shift key and hold whilst also long pressing the $ key.
This should bring up a dialogue window on the tab with a selection of european currency symbols including the £ key.
Use the arrow keys to select which currency symbol you want then hit enter. voila :D
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

On the Extreme if I try this all I get is ######################### (the # autorepeats). There's more to it than just the currency symbol - it took me an age to locate the pipe ( |) and a few others appear in odd places. It's not just a TE thing either.

What is lacking is some way of defining globally the layout for an external keyboard (bit like keyb uk on DOS/Windows).

The long press seems to be a function of the soft keyboard.

Sorry this didn't work for you on the Extreme. I did use an external keyboard on my Excel for this test and not the android onscreen keyboard and the long-press definitely works using my external keyboard. Must be hardware differences between the two Scroll models. :(

I've resolved the problem by installing a USB/Bluetooth Keyboard enhancer - it allows you to chose the UK key layout once you have plugged in the keyboard. Also reailised that with two USB ports on the Extreme I can plug in both a keyboard and a mouse 8-)

Thanks for the help.
