Also for some reason I don't get the full 512MB of RAM , I get about 310 MB of RAM and auto rotate screen does not work on the 4.0.4?
Hi Winschool, the fact that apparently you don't understand why your tablet only reports around 310MB instead of the full 512MB advertised concerns me, particularly as you go on to also say you want to flash another ROM on your Excel which is currently running ICS 4.0.4.
The reason that your tablet only reports 300MB or so is because the rest of the 512MB is being used by the operating system and various background services needed to make your tablet functional. If you use the analogy of a library shelf that can hold 20 standard books but lets say 4 of those books are used as indexes to what the other books contain, then you could argue - as you are implying in your question - that you have been robbed of 4 book spaces. When in fact these 4 book spaces are necessarily filled with special books which hold the information needed for you to find which of the other 16 books has the information in it that you want.
Regarding ICS 4.0.4 - I would ask why do you want to change it as it is proven as a predominantly stable version of the android operating system which is compatible with most apps you can download. It is true that flashing/testing different ROMs can be a lot of fun but also can be a lot of hassle too, particularly if you either don't fully understand what you are doing or alternatively you don't mind or care if you brick your tablet - something which I guess you don't want to do.
A lot of people who buy a tablet seem to think that they can improve on what the manufacturer gives them, and sometimes this is true, and was even more so with early models but as time has gone on android tablets have improved in leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, this rapid increase in technology firmware and hardware has left a legacy of many tablets of the same brand/model (this is particularly true of Storage Options who market the Excel range) which although they may look the same and even have the same name - are completely different under the bonnet.
An analogy for this could be Haynes car maintenance manuals which require many versions for a Ford Escort which for many years kept the same generic name but there are many versions and their parts are usually not interchangeable.
You need the right parts for the right model/year just as you need the right firmware/ROM for your particular tablet.
If you are unsure then it is best to leave things as they are. However, if you want to have a go and don't mind if things go wrong then have a look in the
Hackers Resource playground but do so entirely at your own risk.
Finally, regarding the autorotate not working is it definitley switched on in the display settings?
Hope this has been helpful.
