I did a search for this new Scroll Excel and drew a blank, so maybe I'm the first?

Anyhow, I have lots of computers: PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone etc but thought I'd try an Android tablet. I was about to buy the Scroll Excel 53715 when I noticed that the 54585 was about to come out, which has Ice Cream Sandwich and upgraded processor at a lower price. I bought it for £89 but I notice it's now at £99. It arrived today. Specs here.

Charging on USB? Bonus!

I need some pointers. The guides here seem to be for the older models. I'd love to work out how to put files on it (samba?), how to get to the best apps, which is the best H264 player (VLC?). Copying to the device via wifi would be awesome. I want to mainly use it as a video player.

Any advice appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Looks like you got a steal there, well done! You are the first to post here who has the Official Excel with ICS.

Fancy doing me a favour ?

Is this what you mean by Samba?

Looks like VLC for Android is still in development?

Yes. That wifi samba app works a treat. I assume it's the same one as here, which I downloaded.

So I can copy files to the device. What's the best video player to use since VLC is still in development?

Jackpot, according to Amazon they're different h/w specs. I guess the CPU could be overclocked but the RAM is bigger too.
53715: Android 2.3, 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB Memory
54585: Android 4.0, 1.2GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 8GB Memory

Happy to do you a favour suggsy.

Well, for development purposes how do you fancy pulling the firmware off the device for us scrollers? ;)

Yeah that does look like the same samba.

According to what ive heard, mx player is a good video player.

Sure. Just tell me how to pull the firmware and I'll put it somewhere for you.

Ooh! That play.google.com link takes me to the Google Play app. Cool! Thx.

And although wifi is working fine, is there a way of getting to the storage area from a PC using a USB cable?

Yeah just plug in the Excel and click the "Clock" at the bottom then click "USB connected" you can then turn on USB Storage.

Do you know how to use "ADB" aka Android Debugging Bridge?

Ha! Sure enough. USB storage is working. That was easy. Thank you.

ADB? No idea.
