Righto, I am about to Mod my Cyclone Astro... find it best to keep a record of what I do and when so I can troubleshoot should something go wrong :)

So, basically it arrived with Gingerbread (2.3) installed and the Android Market (one of the few that DID come with it installed, hence why I bought it...also stated fully upgradeable to ICS). The day I got it I setup my gmail and accessed the Android Market and downloaded the usual stuff (Facebook etc). I have a Galaxy S II, so I knew a good dozen apps I wanted. All installed and ran fine.

The evening I I got it I upgraded to ICS (standard firmware from Sumvision Website) before seeing replies on here. As such I didn't do an "original" backup with CWM5. Once ICS was installed I realised how much better it was...its great, smooth and fast! This tablet really does rock!

Upgrading to ICS DOES (or did for me) strip all data out... so no accounts, no wifi password, no apps... nothing. So I started downloading apps again...only this time many did not appear in the now named "Play Store".

After digging around on here I realise there is a Market issue, where the tablets fingerprint file tells PlayStore that the tablet cannot run certain apps. Hence, where the need to mod comes in.

From what I can work out I will be installing clockwork something and then doing some other bits (will explain later) basically, to end up with my tablets fingerprint being that of a Galaxy S 2, and therefore, opening up all the apps once again.

Before I do that, here is a list of games/apps I have installed on the standard ICS update firmware:

Ebay
Skype
Solitaire
Angry Birds (Seasons?)
Fruit Slice
Temple Run
TurboFly 3D Demo
3D Bowling
BBCi Player (i think I installed this... lol)
Death Rally (great game)
Digital Clock (as the ICS clock is bottom right, and this is a Widget you can sit anywhere)

I didn't want to go too crazy as I am honest enough to say I have not yet studied the MOD guides, so I may lose all this... but hey ho... its all good fun.

Files I have DL'd yesterday from this forum (again not sure I need all of these but my work internet is MEGA fast and home is around 1Mb!)

android_winusb.zip
android-sdk_r18-windows.zip
crane-evb_unsigned_041712_173849.zip
LiveSuite 1.07 x86 x64.zip
Scroll Excel Android 4 CWM5.zip
Scroll_Excel_4.0.3_English.zip
tablo-23-rom.zip

Current tablet info is as follows (from "About tablet"):

Model: M701C (Cyclone Astro [Scroll Excel])
Android: 4.0.3 (Updated on day of purchase from 2.3)
Baseband: 1.0
Kernal: 3.0.8+
Build: 97F1-D1-H2-H01-N413.20120309

Righto, my next posts will be as I do the mod... Wish me luck :)

OK so my first move is to install ClockwordkRecoveryMod5, as per POST number 2 in this thread:
viewtopic.php?t=2155

Not sure if tablet has to be off, so I will do that first.

Here goes...

EDIT:
OK so clicking the BAT file opens a warning page, saying "Make sure your Scroll Excel is plugged in with USB debugging enabled: (Go to Settings to Applications to Development to USB debugging)"

So I'll do that now...Cyclone tablet= "System Settings>{ } Developer options>Usb debugging" As a note, this already has a tick...ah well, worth checking.

So...as the tablet is ON, I'll try this with the tablet on, so USB connected..and running the .bat

Hmm, strange... plugging in with the tablet on and the device driver isn't installed correctly... yet I used this PC to upgrade to ICS... will go into Admin Tools>ComputerManagement>DiskManagement... It seems plugging in the tablet, gives me THREE removable disk drives, I assume internal and external storage on the tablet?
For ease I'll change the drive letters to S: T: and U: (maybe I should call my tablet STU? :).

Right even after that I'm going to try running the bat now..

So a menu appears on screen, and I choose (1.) for Install ClockworkMod Recovery.

Device not found... clearly I have a driver error... so I'll go into Device manager, remove the driver that is there and then put the tablet into the mode where I hold down the vol+ key and press the power button a few times...

Ok got some driver issues here.. :(

Ok so sorted that, and driver is recognised...but device not found..perhaps it needs to be on? OK, nope... no luck... doesn't appear to be able to find the device... but also, LiveSuite is moaning about the driver again..but the driver is working.

Hmmm under Device Manager>Other Devices>I have Android, and what looks like an error symbol..

So currently downloading the SDK installer, its the one thing I didn't manage to do yesterday.. dammit!

Also, Cyclone tablet seems to be non-responsive at the mo... slightly worrying! Think I confused it... a simple paperclip in the reset hole and voila... back in action.

So far the SDK has installed, but is downloading updates, and I need to install the "extras" before continuing... stoopid slow internet...time for Death Rally! :)

OK so I'm back.. decided to go out for a few hours and let the PC do its thing :)

SDK manager is installed, as is all its bits :)

About to check device manager, and if needs be re-install driver...

OK so it all looks OK, time to try CWM bat file again

GRR Ok I am tryign all sorts, and simply I keep getting the "Device not found" error...I'm searching this forum and there is a slight issue, but that guy resolved it... but not sure how...

OK so flashed back to 2.3.3 using the tablo firmware... just to see if I had jumped ahead when going to ICS.

Not working, so I am deciding NOT to install CWM5... and to dive straight in to the "perfect" firmware... as per viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2406

Firmware on! Need to run this super script tho...and I think I may struggle same issue as before. I don't understand why LiveSuit can see the tablet, but these batch files can't find it? Hhmm...

Tablet booting up now... and...well it works... but hmmm script won't run, also tablet seems laggy... no wait, it just hung for a minute, response is fine.

Without that script tho i am no better off than I was this morning...still can't install Facebook and the like...

OK so amazingly I am now back on the OS I was on this morning, and I seem no better off, its definately a driver problem, and now I know there is no point in moving forward, as NO script (batch) seems to recognise the tablet is connected.

I am on Windows 7 ultimate, 32-bit. Till tomorrow... hopefully to make progress!

Last night while I was playing with the tablet I did install Chainfire 3D from the Android Market, and ROM Manager (ClockWorkMod Recovery..but you need to have it installed via a .bat too and that is my next step). I will do more investigation, but worth mentioning they were installed.

Righto, my next posts will be as I do the mod... Wish me luck :)

In my opinon the next step is to install the drivers, to do this use the installer as recommended by suggsy89

suggsy89 wrote:I remember back in the days i was struggling myself, i used a program called pdanet, it will install the ADB Drivers for you, just follow the prompts...

Download

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4364278/Excel/Various/PdaNetA350.exe 32-bit

This will allow scripts and batches to be run to your device... so I guess your first step would be to install the Clockwork Recover Mod, I am yet to do this as I had issues, but I will be installing it, I just wanted to summarise how I got to where I am.

I also installed the android SDK and updated it. Whether it was "used" at all, I dunno, but again worth mentioning.

Once the drivers are installed (and you have chosen whether or not to install the Clockwork backup mod) flash your new firmware. I used the firmware given in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2406

The firmware download page: http://www.mediafire.com/?bl1xfgm3h3g4r
Download: 4.0.3-97F1-D1-H2-H01-N413.20120314.part1.rar and 4.0.3-97F1-D1-H2-H01-N413.20120314.part2.rar

You will also need the script due to
*Note: has locked Market apps (my custom script does fix it, run it immediately after the firmware flash)

Download the script: http://www.mediafire.com/?ro9jikqsqdx3i2o

The tablet needs to be on with the USB debugging selected in the developer options when running the script (unlike the firmware when it needs to be off with the vol+ and the power button presses).

and that is basically where I am at. Fully working Market, lots of apps i am nto sure what they do or if I need them, and for me at least, no Clockwork Recovery, but I am about to look at that, and this Titanium backup that seems to have been installed.

Just as a note, I decided to go ahead with these mods without clockwork as the tablet is only a few days old and I always intended to re-flash it with ICS... so it didn't matter that I lost info when re-flashing. If you have had your tablet a while and do not want to lose your info, make sure you research the various backup options (I do not yet understand them, but I will be looking into them now).

Thanks for reading... :D

Hi mikenseli,

Like the style and your summary in getting to your goal.
I am curious about a point regarding Amazon Market - perhaps you can answer for me.

KingKong (you say is now installed) is the americanised version of SlideMe market which cames as firmware on the Excel. You also say that Amazon Market is now installed.

Taking these two points together suggests an americanised build - Amazon market will not allow you access to their weekly free apps unless you are (seen to be) in America. Can you actually download apps from Amazon Market?
