Virgin Broadband - WiFi

I've tried my tablet at a number of locations, at work its lightening fast connected to a wifi router service provided by BT. However at three other location I can use the wifi but it might pause for a minute then be fast then pause again. Each of the three are on Virgin broadband, two of which are on the same router, so I don't think its necessarily the router. Anyone have any ideas or are also on Virgin and its working smoothly ?

When I get back tonight I'm going to check to see if there are any routers in the area transmitting on the same channel, then I'll change mine to the least congested, but other than that I can't think of anything else.

I am on Virgin at home, and not problems whatsoever - if that helps :)

Thanks Pete, hopefully it will be a channel being used by a lot of routers in the area and I can change it to a less busy one.

Have a look on the market for "wifi analyzer" it will tell you who is running on what channels in your area. Try 1, 6 or 11.

If your router is a 300Mb one, it may be broadcasting on two channels in which case tablets get a bit confused and try to connect to one or the other, not both. In this case, get into your routers wifi settings and reduce them to "up to 145".

Thanks FF, I'd just downloaded WiFi Analyzer at lunchtime and tested it, it will actually recommend which channels to use. Looking forward to getting home to try this out :)

For info my router at home supports wireless N which I think I have it set to, I can't remember seeing anything about reducing my Mb speed, so would dropping it to wireless G standard have the same effect?

The Excel supports wireless N so there should be no need to change your router to G. The two different channels your router would be broadcasting on for G and N shouldn't conflict, but like fonefixer said try reducing it anyway to see if that fixes it.

Wifi G will have a similar effect but thats not what we want......

This is a screenshot from a VM Superhub. In 802.11 mode there are three options... up to 54, up to 145 or up 300Mb/s. The 145 one can be seen on screen. This is the one that operates in "single channel mode".( the one you want)

Thanks to the suggestions but unfortunately they didn't help BUT I have got it working after getting a couple of tips off of the web.

My Router is of the slower N standard so I didn't have the option to downgrade the mbs, what I had to do was this.
1. I had my SSID hidden, I unhid it.
2. my security was WPA, changed it to WPA2 which is actually more secure but also alows a higher throughput.
3. I had my Router set to 11B, G and N mixed mode, I've set it to 11G mode only. Seeing as my PC is wired direct to the Router I'm not too concerned about the minor loss of speed my Son my get on his PC ;) saying that he reckons its just as quick.

My tablet is now performing flawlessly and running very fast on the web :)

Glad you got it sorted. I was going to suggest one other thing.....

In advanced wifi settings look for " regulatory domain" and change it to 14 channels.
