Tethering

Postby drumajo » January 18th, 2012, 9:19 pm

Hi guys!

I'm loving my Scroll Excel - it's amazing for the price!

I have a Vodafone Mobile Broadband dongle connected to my Dell laptop. Is it possible to tether (or somehow gain internet access) going via the laptop into the Scroll Excel using the wifi within the Scroll?

I've tried to do it with no luck as yet - The Scroll simply doesn't pick up any Vodafone signals.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Oh, and what's Mifi?

Huge thanks

Jo

I've got a '3' Huawei E160G mobile broadband dongle on PAYG. Unfortuntely it's got no airtime on it at the moment so I can't get online. However, plugging it in to the Excel via the OTG cable shows 3 bars of 3G signal.

Just tried a 3g ZTE HSUPA USB stick - Model: MF112 (no credit on it) - It does not work apart from the green LED lighting up, most likely for mass storage, as you can but an SD card in it.

Looking at the support FAQs for the Tablo (an Excel clone?) via http://www.box.co.uk/Tablo_7_Tablet_with_Capacitive_Multi-To_1156442.html it says:

Q. Can I use 3G to access the internet whilst on the move?
A. Tablo does not have 3G built in. To use 3G you may be able to set-up tethering and use your mobile phone as a WiFi hotspot if you have a smartphone and the correct tariff. Contact your mobile provider for more information on setting this up. Tablo also supports the following Huawei WCDMA 3G Dongles - E220/E230/E180/E1550/E1630/E1750/E1782/E1820. We will update this list as we test more dongles.

So, maybe, it's a Huawei 'thing'.

The FAQ also says:
Q. Will Android 3 (Honeycomb) or 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) be available for Tablo?
A. Android 3 has now been replaced by version 4 so you will not see Honeycomb on Tablo. However it is possible that Android 4 could be released for Tablo at some point in the future. Stay tuned for more information.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't, maybe they don't like to say 'No!'

@ Mitre - You're right, maybe the product sales 'roadmap' says they need something to put a bounce into their Summer sales campaign. If ICS is made available on an existing product line, they can't use it as a big selling feature for the next model.

My PAYG dongle is £10 a month, but I only top up if I know I'm going to need it (rarely do!).

Mine works out to £3.33 and you can pay £10 for 1 month european coverage
do most 3G dongles have a sim or are they locked and built in
only the Dongle for the Archos G9 is unlocked so you can put your own sim in its about £40
