MX Video sees and plays video fine (the lip sync issue is still there), I now need to find a music player that will see the files on the external drive... individually, they play okay through the file manager app.

I love it when you hear things like this :D thinking of getting some sort of NAS in the future so will be keeping this in mind

This is a standard USB3 drive attached directly through the Excel's Micro USB socket.

Separately, I can hook the drive up to the network via a USB to Ethernet box.

I haven't tried connecting the drive to the network, then getting the Excel to access it wirelessly, which is what I guess you'd need to do with the NAS. I don't know for sure, but I don't believe the Excel can be connected to the network by wire... no Ethernet interface.

It's not a great time to be buying hard drives, they're still comparatively expensive because of the Thai floods.

Awesome, I'll add it to the list!

I've never had this lip sync issue, for my movies I've got files shared on my Windows 7 compute then using ES File Explorer I can browse the shared files on my network. I use MoboPlayer which works great to play the files. Give it a test, the only thing it doesn't do itself is browse network directories, but thats only a minor inconvenance for me.

Wifi would probably be the preferred option. The device only supports USB 1.1 which is 12Mbps. I've not even bought a memory card for my Excel yet because everything I've got is hosted on cloud storage, documents for dropbox and movies/music on my computer. To be honest i've only really used it in the house so I will be able to test its full benefits of portability when I'm back at uni at the end of the month.

Hardware Devices Support

Postby daboy1968 » January 16th, 2012, 10:01 am

Just a note of one that doesn't work. I've tried my WD "My Passport" 2.5 inch 250GB HDD and it doesn't work. You can hear the armature scanning or hunting the drive, but no output!

It's Formatted in FAT, to use with both PC and Mac, but no joy with the Excel!

It doesn't have an external power port or supply, so I assume that the 650 mAh it requires from USB just isn't available. I tried it with the Excel both on batteries and connected to 240v and no joy!

Very strange how some external hard drives and others aren't. It should be able to recongise FAT format, the usb pen I tried was FAT32 formatted.

@Excel was there anything you had to do to get your WD external HD to work or was it just plug and play? What format was it in?
