My Versus Touchpad Tablet Adventure

I've been on a quest to find a replacement tablet for my Excel and not had any luck. It all started in January when I bought a 10.1 Sumvision Cyclone Voyager tablet, which had to be returned (screen defect) for a refund as no stock available at that time. Ebuyer now have a Bluetooth version in stock, but I decided not to buy it for two reasons, the hassle I had with the refund from ebuyer and the quality in general of the returned tablet was not that great.

This week I found a nice 10.1 tablet by Cnm in Argos and I had a look at it in store and it seems very nice, but the rear camera is only 0.3mp and not sure if the battery is 520mAh or 7000mAh (as both are quoted by manufacture) - Also Argos will only except returns if faulty on tablets - So no way will I buy from them for the latter reason alone.

I then found a make called "Versus" (which are made by the same people that make the Cnm brand tablets, it seems the Cnm is exclusive for Argos) I bought the 10.1 Versus tablet from Maplin, it was a better spec than the one in Argos and £10 more, but as I had a voucher it worked out to be only £3 more. I really liked it, however the power button was sticking down and eventually stayed stuck down. I got a replace from my local store, but that one was quickly retuned as there was a 4mm scratch & dust under the middle of the screen.

I managed to reserve one in the B'ham store for pick up on Saturday and made a special trip in, only to be told there was a problem (still not sure if it was BS and the sales guy wanted to buy it for him self - Maplin staff had just got paid too, hmm) and that head office had advised staff not to sell the 10.1 Versus tablets as they were getting returned due to "just going dead after awhile" - So if the guy was not giving me bull, that is a bit disappointing about that tablet.

Later that day I when to the Tamworth store, were I tested out a 7" Versus (great service from the 2 guys there that helped me out) and I bought the 7" tablet - Unfortunately that was returned today as it will not charge. Also I was not going to swap for another as the battery life was only 4hrs (which was stated on the box) but I did hope I could get more life out of it - I was wrong. WiFi kept dropping out a lot and struggled at times to re-connect, the contrast was way high, there was lots of light bleed on the screen and dust under the screen too.

So my quest fro a decent 10.1 (maybe a 7") tablet continues...

All comments and thoughts welcomed

Hi Charlie, sounds like you have had quite a tablet journey, sorry you've had so much trouble.
Sorry I inadvertently stomped all over your post before I checked your links out and posted the same ones.
Have moved post to the lounge.
Glad to see you back on again.

What's your budget Charlie for your 10" tablet?

My budget for a 10.1 tablet is £150 (would go to 170 if the specs' were better) - Just wish I had voucher or discount code for Argos and I might be tempted to get the one from there.

UPDATE:

On Wednesday new stock of the Versus 10.1 tablet came into stock at Maplin so I bought one, yet again this one had an issue too (vertical lines on screen) so I went back to get a replacement only to find that the other one they had in stock had loads of dust (around 10 spots) under the screen, so refund time again!

Yesterday I took a chance on the CnM Touchpad 10.1 DC tablet from Argos (which is a re-badged tablet by the same company that do Versus tablet) - So I was not holding my breath on the quality. Good news, the back camera was only meant to be a 0.3mp (as per specs) but turns out to be a 2.0mp camera. I am impressed with the quality, yes it's not perfect. I never expect perfection with these budget tablets, but there is a level of acceptance that the previous tablets were so far from. The CnM 10.1 does have 1 dead pixel and 1 spot of dust under the screen, both are hardly noticeable and the hardware and software functions I have tested on it so far have been more than fine. It's comes with Play already installed and working and this tablet can be easily rooted with "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18" - So far so good, looks like I will be keeping this one (touch wood) :D

John Lewis's sells the Versus 10.1" for £169.99 with a 2 year guarantee. They seem to be out of stock on their website at the moment, but it may be worth waiting for.

If you're looking for a keyboard and stand to go with it this is a real bargain (I've jut tried it today and it works really well):
