It's only this year that the Pi got an additional 256Mb of RAM - most of us started with 256Mb and I doubt if these would have provided the performance needed for Video (mine used to struggle with MP3 audio if there was anything else going on) The 512Mb version makes it well usable for things other than its original "educational" purpose.
My "last year" version has now been retired till I find another use for it (perhaps a local Webserver using Lighttpd)
