Ok. It's worked fine on my test rig. Would you like the pre rooted jpm froyo? Or would you like to flash the jpf bootloader as well as the other firmware? Might make a difference.

Your opinion 'Oh Wondrous One' as to which is the best approach :D

Thanks but will persevere for a while, I think I may have installed an app that's running all the time and I don't really want it

btw: temporary z4root seems to go through the motions but doesn't give me su access.

Z4root won't on the jpf firmware. Have a look at sync settings in accounts.

Background data is ticked as is Auto-sync. Gmail sync is on too. On my GT Auto-sync and Gmail is off. What does all that mean?

BTW Gents

Have scoured the forums today and found that Samsung will be releasing bug free Froyo imminently, and WITHOUT announcement !!! So I think I will wait for the plug in approach and not attempt the " more than two working parts" advice herein. Its horses for courses as they say.............

Below is a 12yr olds full "How To " video on how to do it.... (Kids eh )

Can you post a link to where you saw this please? I can find nothing on GSPN ( Samsung engineers technical portal).

Sorry Fonefixer,

The forums, I referred to appear to be the 15800 Orange versions which are getting the roll-out largely unannounced, however mootling about did find this
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy ... k-yet.html
http://androidphoneonline.info/report-a ... -apollo-2/
seems hearsay and speculation to me.
But I have a question , is Kies recognising Orange handsets differently to ours for the Froyo update, when cableised with the PC if so despite your excellent instruction set on upgrading, I still think I will wait, cause one thing I dont want to do is do it all again when Samdung let our sets have it officially.
Quite frankly all this is doing my napper in.
Also Question 2 , can I install apps2SD on my non-rooted Froyo free phone and shift things over. I think I tried to download it but it didnt because my phone wasnt rooted or something like that ?

Lots of questions which I will do my best to answer! :)
The orange variant to which you refer is the I5801. It is essentially the same handset ( hardware is identical) but the firmware is orange- branded ( logos/ extra apps and other pointless crap). The handset is also locked to only accept orange UK sim cards.
The reason froyo was issued to orange handsets is that orange spat their dummy out and rushed froyo through to keep their customers happy. Their version has a few issues atm.
Kies checks Samsung servers based on imei/product codes and firmware version. If an upgrade is offered it will be loaded. If not there are ways to fool Kies into upgrading to a different variant firmware but this is very dangerous as it loads a new bootloader which can crash and kill the handset.
I can help load whichever version you need,- just let me know.

Thanks for the info, and is that why I cant load apps2SD as the phone needs to be rooted by Froyo first. I would like to have the ability to shift apps onto the card to save phone memory, but is comes back as a parsing error.

Sorry, I forgot to answer that one.
Apps to SD doesn't work on eclair.
Making an app run from the SD card is a native function of froyo, it doesn't need to be rooted in order to do so. The apps2sd program is merely a notifier that will tell you when an app can be moved to SD. In fact, if you look in the applications list in froyo it will have a button enabled that says " move to SD card" if the button is greyed out the app can't be moved.
