Link two routers

Postby Mitre » January 30th, 2012, 11:44 am

Hi all
can one of you router guru's give me some advice i currently have 2 skt netgear routers conected together with cat6
they are both linked to 1 account but are named different sky1 and sky2 i have done this so that the signal is extended to the garden
if i am in the house everything logs on to sky1 if i am in the garden i have to manually connect to sky2
not too much of a problem and i dont seem to suffer any speed reduction

can i pair them so they are both sk1 so everthing just auto connects if i move around
and will it slow down the connection speed i currently get 4Mbps
or is this not possible

My brain hurts after a day of telecom wizardry so bear with me......

If they are connected via ethernet (cat6) you can have them set so they have the same SSID. I wouuld, however, suggest you use different wifi channels on each.

The big nono to this is that the Scroll does not support wifi roaming, which is what you mean when you want them to seamlessly switch between the two signals.

I have a similar setup to you but I have a Netgear N600 dual band gigabit router and a netgear wn3000rp access point connected via wifi which extends the range into my "garden". My scroll will not connect to the extender unless the other signal is completely unavailable, and even then I have to do it manually.

i see what you say about the wifi roaming so the excel or phone will just auto conect to the last one it was conected to regardless of proximity or signal strength
so leave it as is it works pretty good but i will check the channels
thank you FF
my brain hurts after all that last night nearly had to hit the big red button

I started to read all that went on but have been distracted by a beautiful sunset and an excellent bottle of egyptian turps
