Ive not tried this one... so it is AT YOUR OWN RISK! It seems similar to accessing the recovery menu I think.

To do a manual reset:

Hold the volume+ button for ten seconds, whilst still holding it press and hold the on button until an android icon appears.
When you see the android icon press the home button.
Use the + volume button to navigate to the factory data reset option then use the - volume button to select.
Then select reboot device.
Done

CWM also has a reset option similar

I have done a manual reset, and up to calibrating the screen all seem to go okay, but I have come to a screen where I am told to press the little android man to continue, but nothing happens when I press him, so I am stuck.

any advice, or do I now own a brick?

I sent it back and received a refund. I am now the proud owner of a ipad.
