I know some of you will want to reply that AV is just not needed on Android :o My reason to start using an antivirus is the recent issues highlighted on the Android Market with Apps containing a virus. As we all know we generally have to source our downloads from other Market sources. How well vetted are the Apps on these sources? I for one do not know. So please be kind and don't tell me off for using an AV ;)

I have kept a keen eye on various AV Apps and user reviews etc... For me I needed the AV to scan downloads and my micro SD without causing the Scroll to grind to a FC or crash. It has taken some time before deciding to give Webroot Security AV a try. It is advertised as Mobile and Tablet security and the base version is FREE containing all the useful stuff I wanted. There is a Pro version which adds remote locking, data clear and Locate your device. The APK can be downloaded from Slide me:

http://slideme.org/application/webroot- ... ere-mobile.

The install was pretty quick but you do have to register by giving your e-mail details. Once the install is completed, start the program and you begin setting up your AV. It will update the definitions and start a full scan including your SD. The taskbar has a little icon to show it is running and all is well! You can also get into the Webroot AV via the taskbar. It did'nt find anything :o

How effective this is I just do not know and yes it may not be needed. However, this AV has not caused any slowing or issues with the Scroll, so for now I will continue to use it. It is for Android 2.1 upwards so should work on all Scroll versions.

It is down to you to decide if you really need a AV, this one seems ok. ;)

Cheers
Andy

CAUTION:
I have found an odd side effect with this app. All had been fine, I went to play a movie and the scroll coud not play the file? This was the last app I had installed prior to video failing. I turned off all AV shields and video was still faulty. I then uninstalled the AV and the video now works fine. :) phew......

For that reason I would not recommend this AV app.

I'm still considering if AV is required, as I plan on using a Windows laptop to download and store all of my Android files. Does anyone know if NortonAV will find and deal with potential risks in Android based files prior to install? I suppose the real question is, can Norton scan and detect "cross platform" attacks or risks?

Email risks are not a problem for me, as I use a Webmail client for email, so every email is scanned prior to download and stored on the cloud.

Maybe you should email Symantec and asked them the question.
