Not charging

Absolutely gutted, the pin on the charger was loose when I bought it but it charged so just carried on with it. However in the end it wouldn't charge, got in touch with Storage options and credit to them they posted out another charger within two days. However this one doesn't work, it looks like the pin is to short. When you fiddle with the original one it takes time but you can get a charge. Have emailed Storage options and explained the problem to them, and await there reply. Was just wondering if anyone knows would I have to return it to Play.com or Storage options to rectify the problem, also worried about loosing everything on it like my books from Amazon for kindle. Any advice would be welcome, it's still under warranty as only got it at Christmas.
Thanks Mark.

Mark: Does it charge via the usb port? You could use something like a tomtom home charger or the like.

Thanks for the advice Fonefixer, I'll see what storage options say. If that fails then I'll try that, they were very prompt and helpful sending a new charger out so fingers crossed. Like I say it's still under warranty, I'd have thought it would be covered.

It should be AFAIK. Is it the chargers plug or the scroll internal connector that's loose?

Don't believe this have dropped it before posting it to SO it now has a ding on the corner, it's even on the corner of the charger. Had all the paperwork ready to send of from SO what they emailed me. Have tried the USB and even bought a mains adaptor that the USB goes into with no luck. My warranties now invalid as have dropped it, think it's the internal connector. Was going to open it up and have a look but don't know what I'm looking for. Would it cost to much to repair or would I be better just getting another one, lucks just not been on my side with this one. It still charges now and then with the old one but takes ages fiddling with it, even the pin fell out and just pushed it back in, SO sent a replacement charger but that didn't work am at a loss what to do. Any advice please ? Also sorry Dave didn't see your reply or would have replied.
Regards,
Mark.

Here's what I think youre looking for if you open it up.....
1) Trace where the connection between the normal charge socket and the usb socket joins. With a multimeter see if you get +5v at the common point when the charger is connected.
2)Look for cracks on the main board
3) run a soldering iron across the connector pins of the usb port - one may have disconnected and popped up.
As it is still charging now and then it does point to a loose connection, probably a cracked board or a crap joint. Boards can be repaired if you're careful and you scrape off the green board paint to reveal the broken track, a small blob of solder will rejoin it most of the time. You might need a magnifier to see the crack.

Many thanks Dave, have printed of what you've said and took it to a phone repair shop today. Just said have not got the tools to do it myself, hoping it's just a loose connection. Couldn't believe it when I dropped it, would have to leave a ding on the corner next to the charger. Have had it in a protective case since have had it, and taking it out to return it was when I dropped it. If they can't repair it will just have to buy another, as would miss this forum to much. Best wishes Dave, and once again many thanks for the hard work you put into the forum. Mark

No problem! I like to help where I can.
The thing that pointed me to an internal problem was that neither connection was working reliably. I'm guessing the scroll has a 5v regulator of some kind, even possibly as crude as one 5v zener diode across the supply which could be knackered. If they are surface- mount they are bloody hard to identify without a circuit diagram or part number. I'm too old to trace stuff now without being familiar with the circuitry!

Many thanks Dave and Mitre, Advice is/was really appreciated. When I used the mains connection with a usb adaptor it did show it was charging but the battery icon never moved. Also it's been all over the place one minute it was showing 100% then a minute later down to 20% then back up and down again. Hopefully it can be fixed, if not I'll pick up another one. Will get the same model as it's ideal for my needs and I'm familiar with it now, nice to know that wont loose my books as did buy them on amazon with a gift voucher
