Is it possible to remove volume+/- icons from the Notification Bar?

No simple way to do that - You need to edit this /system/app/SystemUI.apk/ and replace the images (for the volume icons) to a blank smaller one - but I am sure the the .apk needs unpacking, repacking, signing etc...
