noob struggling

I have an 8" scroll, came today

has android 2.3 on it...

I wanted it to download texts from the uni website to use as an e-book reader, but when I click download it doesn't do anything as I think its meant to 'pop up' but doesnt. so I downloaded to my usb stick (using another pc) and plugged it in...

nightmare trying to locate the usb stick, it came with es file explorer and I had to scroll through all the folders.. surely there is an easier way???

anyway, the pdf files are on a time limit (5days) so when I eventually got the file adobe would not open it as it said that version does not support that feature :( so can't use it for the reason I bought it for...

so was going to let my little girl use it for cbeebies games, only non of the games work, neither i player as said I needed flash... tried to get flash and the official market was 'loading' then said there was an error. in the scroll leaflet it said that 'paid' apps can not be accessed in the official market but does not say that free ones can't.

and I have had the wi-fi hangups :( I have turned off the sleep setting to 'never' but still occasionally hangs. I have a d-link router with wpa2 and a small key.

I really need some help getting to grips with it, I have never used android before, I have a bb for a phone and windows for a pc. it took me a frustrated hour getting rid of the hint bar... couldnt for the life of me see the recycle bin (yes I now know that it wasn't 'holding' long enough'

I have seen some of the how to guides for the work around for the marketplace and I am no scaredy cat when it comes to technology but they seem waaaay past my level of skill...

how do I remove an application if I do not like it?

sorry for the rambling but I need to convince DH into letting me keep the scroll....

Thanks for any help

and still have no clue with the marketplace...

are people with 2.3 able to use the marketplace for free apps as thats what the manual infers???

oh and people talk about 'rooting' and cmw??

what on earth is that all about??

hi joisey,
I see your struggling a bit lol the scroll takes a bit of getting used to. There are ways of getting the market to work you have to read up a bit do a search in this forum.
I use super manager found that a bit better than es file explorer googled it and downloaded it on my pc first.I can also launch market from super managers task manager.after a factory reset. but it will only work for a day before it packs in again.
I use kindle app to read books but I convert all my pdf's or text books into mobi files on my pc using a program called calibre(free)google it . other people have different ways of doing the same thing.
I'm not overly impressed with android.
everything is such an ass to get working.
I'm waiting for the new windows tabs to get going I'm sure they are going to kick android into oblivion.
I'm not sure why your wifi hangs have you got a good signal?.
Have you tried changing channels on your router ? .
you don't need to root your tab unless you modding it and that can brick it so don't try it unless you reall have to'

Hi,

From reading your 1st post & what you what this device to do - IMHO it is not really going to do what you want it to do - without major headaches, and then it will only do 1/2 (if your lucky) of what you would like.

1. There is no way you will get flash to work on this - it has the wrong chip (CPU)

2. You will be lucky to get full market working on this (only 1-2 out of ten do) and that takes a lot of work.

Sorry to sound blunt, just trying to help. (I want to save you from wasting your time and money) - If you still have time I would take it back for a full refund.

Hope this helps :D

P.S - Still stick with an Android tablet, just get something else.

Hi

thanks for the advice everyone :)

I can live without flash... would only be able to use beeb stuff in the house with wi-fi and dd can just use the pc.

I am guessing from the replies that the official marketplace will not work even for free apps?? (think I need to contact storage options as the handbook is misleading :( )

the main reason for purchase was to read pdf files. which I need to check for non secured pdf files to see if they will work.

will have a look at super manager...

is there any 'writing text apps' like word??? I know there is the dataviz application but that needs paying for and its not cheap :(

I won't use it for email or facebook as I have a blackberry for that!

I like it... but it might have to go back :(

the wi-fi does hang and I have to switch it off and on again to get it to work. its quick to move between menus at first then slows to a snails crawl and I get the 'this blah has stopped working, wait or kill'

any more hints?

got into market place ;)

downloaded office pro at 9.33, well worth it!!! hello typing uni notes rather than writing...

found some other cool bits...

so quick while I can get in what shall I get :D

loving my scroll long time right now!
