Scroll 7 - Kindle books invalid item

I recently purchased a grade b 7 inch Scroll from Maplin - under £90. Android 2.1.

Had a problem with Android Market initially as app downloads would start then stop immediately. Did a factory reset and then downloaded Launcher-pro which gave me the Market shortcut and I then re-installed my apps, including Kindle.

I purchased a couple of Kindle books from Amazon which downloaded on to my Scroll - registered as my second Droid device as I already have a Samsung Europa phone registered at Amazon.

For a couple of days I could read the books fine then 2 days ago, on the paid for books, not the free books, I got a message when trying to open the purchased books saying invalid item, remove and download from archive.

I tried this on multiple occasions and whilst the books appear to download I get the same message when I try and open them.

I have removed the Kindle app and reinstalled it and have the same problem.

Having read around the subject on the web there seems to be a view that this could be a problem without a current fix - Amazon not supporting Kindle on Droid tablets - seems to have hit other makes of tablet, not just Scroll.

Does anyone know if there is a simple fix to this problem? Would I be wasting my time to keep looking?

BTW, I do just have 2 droid devices registered at Amazon currently.

Have been generally impressed with the Scroll 7 for the price - if I can read my purchased Kindle books it knocks the socks of the one-trick-pony Kindle reader!

:D

Welcome to the forum :D

I personally dont use Kindle, so im in the dark a little on this one. However, here's my 2p's worth.....

The Scroll doesnt have an official working market. There may be a licensing issue between the Amazon app and Google that tries to verify the license on the device, obviously if there is no market it cant do so. However, common sense tells me that if you've paid for a book you should be able to read it on whatever device you choose subject to restrictions on number of devices etc.

Unless someone has a better solution (quite possible!) i'd suggest contacting Amazon support

Thanks Fonefixer.

I have read some other forum threads where the same issue has been taken up with Amazon and as at mid-June 2011 they had no solution.

Of course there may be a contractual issue here over purchased books - I have paid for something I can't read. Unless there was a specific term in the contract of sale re the purchased books warning me that they would not work on my platform then perhaps I should be entitled to a refund of £3 or so I spent.

However, I would rather have a working Kindle app.

I will take the issue up with Amazon - if more people raise the issue etc.....

This is a strange one. Before i had to return my scroll for a faulty USB port i was using kindle a lot to read .mobi books. Now, i had to admit, i have a stack of several hundred books that i was ...er..."given" and so they were not 'bought' from amazon by me but they always worked fine [ i am in no way suggesting anything like this should be done by anyone, just recounting my experience]. have you tried copying the .mobi files onto your PC and then bringing them back over onto the SD card and re-openign them in kindle that way? thats effectively what i do. the book i was 'given' are on my PC [i got them on a USB drive ages back] and i simply copied them to the SD card over the USB cable. Then open up the kindle app and it finds the books automagically and robert is your mother's brother... as it were
Hope that helps

Mitre, from my reading the problem seems to be with devices running 2.1.

ddervish - will try this tonight. Had thought about it but promised the wife I wouldn't look at the problem again until the weekend after spending an hour and a half reading threads on various forums on Tuesday night.

Must say I've had no problem with the kindle app, got about a dozen books that bought and just tried them and all are readable. Even bought one a couple of days ago and no problem.

the problem seems just on 2.1 devices my puls e mini 2.1 cant download paid for books, my apollo 2.2 can, my Scroll 2.3 can.
@ frimo i have flashed roms to all my devices and have re-downloaded the kindle app from market so maybe the latest kindle apk has a bug for2.1 as i know i used to be able to load across several 2.1 devices. suggest you make a copy of your kindle apk and keep it somewhere safe on your PC just incase.
@ddervish kindle books arn't .mobi files and calibre will not convert them as they are protected
tried to put the kindle .ebok file into the Pulse mini(kindle folder) but the kindle app doesn't see it??

Update. When a I first power up my scroll and open the kindle app I can read the first book I open. If I leave that book and try a second book or return to the first I get the invalid item error. Weird.
