Wifi very slow

Postby graeme » June 25th, 2011, 9:58 pm

I have a Scroll 8". It connects to my wifi AP fine, and works, but very slowly.

Although it claims to connect at a reasonable speed (up to 48mpbs), which is confirmed by the AP, when I tried doing file transfers over SSH using AndFTP I only got a little over 20KBps.

Web browsing also seems very slow, but I have not measured this. Downloading books from the Calibre server on my laptop was also appeared to be slow. I have also tried setting up a web server on my laptop and connecting to that but had problems connecting.

My laptop works fine with the same network. The AP and the laptop are both b/g

My questions:

1) How can I best measure the speed at which the network will operate? I want to test in a way that will be measurable and which will eliminate the possibility that it was just the apps I was using (i.e. AndFTP). I suppose I could set up a webserver on my LAN and measure download of large files, but there must be something better.
2) If there is a problem, any idea about how to fix it? I tried changing wifi AP encryption and mode setting but nothing made a difference so far.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,
My Scroll 8 is also very slow via Wifi, yet other tablets, laptops connected to same network ok.
Is there anything I can do to my scroll to increase download speeds?

The first thing I would do is check for interference. Even though your other devices are ok it can still cause problems.
Using a WiFi enabled pc or laptop download a free prog called "inssider", run it and see how many local ap's are using your channel. Change to the least populated one and recheck speeds.
There is a free Android app called "WiFi analyzer" that does the same job.

Thanks for the replies.

There are no other APs at all within reach of my laptop - it is what I would expect in this area.

As well as the measured slow speed of downloads, web pages take a long time to open.

I have tried changing AP settings, no change.

One thing that has worked in the past with other devices has been to change the MTU, but the scroll seems to offer no option to do that - and none of those was this slow anyway, and they were connected with ethernet, not wifi.

I know Scrolls dont like the channels above 10

AFAIK the Scroll doesnt support MTU changes. Are you on ADSL or 2+ or cable?
