I've never seen the I.P. address or the system password on the back of a router.
Sometimes the default wireless security key but not always.

You don't need to have any particular I.P. address set to be able to see the router over wireless, only if you're using a wired connection.

You must work with some crap routers. Every router I've used have the default settings right on the back.

And if you don't know the IP of the router how will you access it's settings, seeing as one does so by browsing to it's IP and entering the user & pass? Sure, you are able to 'see' the router, or rather it's SSID if it is broadcasting, but that wasn't the question. The question was about checking and changing it's settings and to do that you need to know the IP, user and pass. That is why the default values, what it will be set to if you reset it, are on the label of the router.

If your default values are not on the label, they will be in the manual. How else will users know how to access the router to set it up when they get it, guess??

I've just had a look on my two routers (a Belkin - yes crap and a Draytek - not crap) and neither of them have eithe I.P. or admin username and passwords on them.

Maybe its Netgear routers than have that on them? I haven't installed many of their domestic routers.
Their commercial routers don't carry any such info on their cases.

Its perfectly easy to setup a router without knowing its settings. Most domestic routers have DHCP enabled by default so all you need to do is make a wireless connection and you're in.

You answered your own question as to how users will know how to access it - its all in the manual (or even the quick setup guide)

Hi all,

Just found this post on another forum, whilst looking for a solution for another issue -

This might help with the wifi issues (i have not read it fully) but take a look if you are having wifi problems with android devices, this might help.

I'm sorry my friend, but this is in no way correct. Making a wireless connection to a router is in no way akin to entering its configuration. While you do not need to know the router's IP to connect to it (if it is set to DHCP), you must know its IP to enter the configuration utility.

How one gets the IP is irrelevant to your statement, which was that it was not needed. The fact that the info should be available on the device is also irrelevant, yet it is logical for it to be there as it is the most basic information one would require if one were to reset the device and there is no good reason to not have it available on the device itself. One may well lose the manual, but were one to lose the device then the information would not be needed in any case.

I'm starting to think you are carrying on this 'conversation' simply for the sake of it. The information I gave was accurate and not in need of correcting, and yet you persist.

my scroll managed to find my wifi last night straightaway before i did a firmware update. i thought i do update anyways but couldnt access with the admin password thing and my flatmate cant remember, so i gave up! If it carries on being temperamental I just plug in the spare one and see what happens. Oh also I managed to get signal in my bedroom which is the furthest room from the router so all good :).
