Postby tiamaria53 » July 4th, 2012, 5:22 pm

Hi
I purchased this product for my grandson for Xmas 2011. Since thaen we have been trying to download apps without much success. The tablet is so slow that it eventually gives up. Is this normal?
Also it is the only computer appliance in the house that has trouble connecting to the internet..again is this normal?
As you can appreciate my grandson is not very happy.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Where have you been trying to download apps from?
How have you tried connecting to the internet?
I assume you must have suceeded connecting at some time in order to download apps.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Hi

From the apps store
Wirelessly as per instructions
and yes sometimes it will connect but is so slow. This is the only piece of IT equipment in the house that has a problem with the internet.

Not much help I know.

Mine is a bit flaky with the wifi connection, which is how I ended up with the problems I'm currently having....
Soooooo.... after some pretty extensive research all over these here t'interwebs, it looks like the wifi antenna is not quite what it could be. (personally I believe the ally case is also a contributing factor. Like trying to use a mobile phone inside a Farraday cage) When you connect, are there other wifi connections available to you? If so, it's possible that the channel used by your wireless access point is busy. My router at home is set to use channel 10 - and is the only one on that channel. Makes a world of difference. Download wifi analyzer (this is an older version than the current release but will work with android 2.1) It's pretty straightforward in use, the first screen will show which wifi channel your device is using, along with any other access points on the same channel. If you are unsure about changing the channel on your access point the isp may be able to connect remotely and do this for you. There may be a cost attached.

Good luck

Regarding the connection, are you using a local secure Access Point (AP) such as a BT Home Hub ? How strong is the wireless signal when you use the Tablet ?

Looking at the logs on my hub I realised that when I used mine in one room the signal was not ideal and what was happening was that it would connect at say 36Mb, then re-try at 24Mb then try again at speeds down to 2Mb dependant on where I was in the room - during this "negotiation" period Web access was very slow/non existant. I think a degree of interference from another AP on the same Wi-Fi channel may have been part of my problem (now solved by installing a Wi-Fi repeater).

If you can download the "Wi-Fi Analyser" app it might give you some idea about just how cluttered the airwaves are at your location. If not then "inSSIDer" on a Wi-Fi equipped laptop will give you the same information.

If you have a BT Home Hub 3 (and perhaps on other APs) you can examine the logs to check out just what sort of connection you are getting.

What other IT equipment have you that connects using Wi-Fi - if someone else in the house is streaming video then that could be why you are on a go-slow.

@tiamaria53,

Sounds like a lot of good advice from BobC - Additionally to that, I have had a drastic thought that you might not want to know about....
apparently, the soldering on some of these devices is not always what it should be and a very respected previous member of this forum who also had similar problems on WIFI, decided to open up his tablet where upon he discovered a dry joint on the aerial wire inside the case. When he resoldered this himself correctly, his WIFI problems were solved. As I say drastic - but who knows.
Like BobC says, check your signal strength and compare it with other wifi devices.
If they are all OK then it may well be something dodgy with the tablet.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!
