It was all going so well...

Having had a couple of Android phones I found a cheapy Scroll (sub £100 with free keyboard/case thing) on ebuyer.

It arrived Friday, so I plugged in and customised away... There's no app icon for Market but I stumbled upon a way to get to it - I was on the Facebook mobile site and clicked the 'Download FB for your Android' link, lo and behold there's the Market app. So if you type market://search?q=something into the browser bar, it launches. Woo.

I only really bought it for an ebook reader, I've been using an old Sony Clie for years but me poor old eyes struggle on a tiny 320 x 320 screen!

Anyway, after a nice customisation session I left it plugged in to charge overnight, but in the morning I disconnected the PSU and... it died! It will only work plugged in, so I suspect a wonky battery. The charge icon in the notifications bar is ticking away, but clearly no actual charging is happening. Bugger. So it'll be back to ebuyer tomorrow for replacement.

First impressions seem good though. For a sub-£100 ebook reader it'll be perfect for me. I miss the capacitive screen of my Desire phone, but it seemed pointless spending more.

Welcome to the forum.... :D

I agree with you, the battery does indeed seem suspect if its turning off when unplugged. Did you notice that the deivce will automatically turn on when plugged in? Try connecting the charger, waiting for it to boot, then turning the scroll off for a couple of hours to see if it charges.

Let us know how you get on.

Yes it does boot as soon as power is connected. I've just shut it down with the PSU connected so I'll report back later!

Later... no, it's definitely buggered. Still just dies when there's no power connected so it'll be on the blower to ebuyer in the morning. I'm sure they'll replace it (they bloody better!), but it's a bit disappointing - I had serious new-toy syndrome!

Thanks for letting us know - ebuyer should replace it no hassle. If not contact Storage Options

New Scroll on its way - after the replacement was authorised it went out of stock and I was considering stumping up some extra pennies for the capacitive version, but it came back in stock today. Roll on tomorrow for take 2...

New kit arrived, and all is well - yay! Couldn't sleep last night so spent a lot of time using iReader to consume some ebooks - much better than the elderly Sony Clie I was using, and iReader supports the .prc and .pdb files too.

Thanks to this excellent forum I've just finished rooting and disabling PMT - thanks guys!

Ebuyer forgot to return the keyboard/wallet (SOKPAD) but I'll hassle them about that next week.
