I made the same mistake and got the same result, ie. it would only get as far as the white boot screen, took it back to maplins and they gave me a replacement, but with some hardware differences, for example the power & volume buttons are now near the home & menu buttons, just 1 mini usb port instead of 2 and the camera had also moved from opposite the home button to the same side as the power button, it also came with working YouTube as well.

Sounds like what they gave you back was not a Scroll - or it could be a new redesigned scroll, but there is nothing in the pipeline as far as I know.

I believe what they gave me was a later model as when i look and the /nand folder it have a folder called Scroll_V2_apps which wasn`t on the one i took back
