Skyfire web browser allows Flash with OS 2.1

Postby admin » December 18th, 2010, 11:51 am

The Scroll is shipped with Android OS 2.1. This does NOT have flash support. In order to have true flash support you need to upgrade to OS version 2.2 or later. However, there is currently no step by step guide on how to do this, and Storage Options do not advise it or support it.

So, if you want or need flash support for any reason within the browser, you can go to the Android Market Place and download the free Skyfire web browser App. Once installed, it's similar to the built in standard browser, except it ALLOWS flash animations and videos to be viewed. Essentially, it has flash support.

This should be a major breakthrough, but unfortunately it's not perfect. Sometimes animations do not appear, other times they slow the rendering of the entire page down. If there is a video on the page (ie Sky News homepage) then instead of the video showing on the page, it puts an image of a video player in it's place. When you click this image it loads the video in a separate video player and attempts to play it. Again, this mostly doesn't seem to work very well - it's very slow (buffering) and the quality is often poor. It's nothing like viewing the page on a flash supported device.

In conclusion, yes this gives you some kind of flash support in the Skyfire browser, but it's often so poor it's not even worth having. However, if you stick with Android OS 2.1, at present this is your best choice for viewing flash within a web browser.

I can't get flash to work at all even with Skyfire. This browser is so slow at loading pages it is next to useless anyway.

Happy days - :D

Just watched a program on the bbc iplayer website with the skyfire app on the scroll - and it worked.

It looks like if does not work at first but the need the menu tool bar at the bottom to popup, if not already shown there, use the hard menu button. then click on on the video icon, the click the play button, opens into a full screen video stream to watch.

I get a panel showing that the program, "The Tudors", is subject to parental control. Only the top half of the panel is displayed so I cannot get to the check box to say I am over 16 or the "ok" box to continue.

Any ideas how to overcome this?
Any help would be appreciated.

charlie,

What version of skyfire do you use? All I get is a green monotone video.

Version I've downloaded is 3.2.2.22310. This is in skyfire settings screen.

Any chance you could email it to me?

Thanks,

I tried it but it gives me a similar issue, now I get vertical purple lines.

I've since posted a question on http://getsatisfaction.com/skyfire/topi ... rome_video

Maybe other scroll users who have the issue can add their voice?

charlie.

I did some more testing and it sometimes works.

It seems that some videos cause the colour map to go haywire, then when you load another video at first it doesn't work then after a while the colour resets it's self?

The big issue is that the sound sync is out by a few seconds?

Anyone have any ideas?
