Android Commander may help, you can set the permissions using that.

shame, looks like android commander isn't going to work - suspect the lack of a working adb shell will account for that.

think i'll give the CWM recovery a miss for now, seeing as i don't have a working adb to create a backup and whatnot

So when you adb shell in recovery, what do you get?

I've just read something online that suggests that if i just zip up the boot.img and try applying that as an update I may have some joy. Figuring "what the hell, why not" can't exactly muck it up any worse

nope, fail, E:signature verification failed

I've read online in the middle of all this using ADB in linux might work better - may be able to push sh with correct permissions. Virtualbox here I come! (Tomorrow)

You must sign the zip also! Stock recovery cannot flash unsigned zip files.

well, just signed my update.zip and nothing, so here goes *deep breath*
